So, I got some AD Trad heavy and Hammer head Heavy, spine 55# - 70# to shoot from my BW 56# at my draw.

I also have my old ones, CE Heritage 250 cut at 29,5 with 100 gr brass inserts and 145 grain point.

I wanted to get, on the AD's, around 200 gr point with 100 gr inserts.

Using Stu's calc, if I cut the AD's Trad to 30 I would get slightly weak and the HH, cut at 30 7/8 also slightly weak.

Received the full length. Installed the regular insert (26 grains) and the 100's ones on some bare shafts. Started shooting by the method of bareshat using my field test kit. Either with the regular and heavy insert I got always stiff going from 100 grain point to 350 grains point!!!! The AD Trad got near the sweet spot with 100 grain insert and 250 grain point, the HH never got close!

Then I started thinking I was going to heavy on the end. I fletched a couple and shot with the bareshaft.

The point of impact was the same but the bareshafts flew sideways hitting with nock left. I'm left handed.

Then I thought my form was getting me these bad results so I shot some bareshafts of the CE. They fly strait as bullets.

What can be happening here?

Few shooters have had success when bareshafting tapered shafts.  Just fletch them up, put the weight you want up front and adjust your nock and brace height until they fly straight.  I shoot full length HH Heavies out of a 55# recurve (drawn to 30.5", so about 62#) and they shoot great.

I believe the 'heavy' series of shafts are too stiff. These are the results I got from a test kit that did not include the stiffer heavy series shafts. These are bare shaft, full length wood grain:
HH lite 56-58# (383gr)
Trad lite 54.25-56.25 (324gr)
HH 76-78 (429gr)
Trad 75-78 (363gr)
These were obtained with my ACE spine tester and a digital grain scale.

So, here's the changes I made and the result's.

AD trad heavy - cut at 30", 300 grain up front (100 insert + 200 point), 4x5" feather = fly great

AD HH heavy - cut at 30 7/8, 300 grain up front (100 insert + 200 point), 4x5" feather = hit the mark I'm looking but have a screw flight in the first 10 feet. Not a difference in changing from 100 grain point up to 250 grain! Went 1/4 inch cut at a time. Flight improved from major screw to just a little but didn't got away!

Bareshaft and fletched have the same point of impact but bareshaft hit with nock left as well as they fly with nock left.
Tests made at 8 yards.

Any pointer on this HH result?

CE still fly like darts after adjusting nock height a bit.

bowhunter in your first post you said your shafts are flying nock right which for a lefty is weak , on your HHs try less point weight [there are all ready heavy weighted up frt in design]. Bareshafting IS possible with ADs or tapered woodies with little problem.

You may be overspined. I shoot the AD Trad and HH out of 60#+ bows, for my 55# and less I shoot AD HH Lites, 30.5" with 100 gr brass insert and 300 gr up front. And yes, trying to bare shaft them is a bear, according to Ted Fry at Raptor, they do not lend themselves well to bare shafting. The AD Trads are 275 spine and are rated for 68#-95# bows, the AD Trqad lites are 325 spine and rated for 35-65# bows. The HH are 250 spine and would be for heavy bows and the HH lites are 325 spine. The HH lites and AD trads weight about the same, 11.5 and 11 gpi respectively.

Stu's calc doesn't jive with ADs....ADs are in a league of their own.  They are not affected by cutting like a normal arrow

Thanks guys. At least I've managed to get the trad's to fly strait. Only the HH have a little screw flight!

I had to take the risk because I don't have this gear here in Europe! Win some loose some!

I received my broad heads today. VPA terminators. What a scare of a broad head and very good flight. Wild boar, be afraid, be very afraid.
