For those who love wood shafts, is it just me or do the modern composites and aluminums lack spirit and or soul?
Today I found an aluminum shaft in my stash that was perfect for the longbow I was shooting, it shot great! but after yrs. of shooting woods it felt as though something was missing, it was as if it had no spirit, just a metal tube being propelled down range without purpose or meaning, unlike a wood shaft that was weighed, spined, stained, sealed, painted, crested and carefully crafted with care to do a job, be it target archery or killing.
Im not knocking aluminums, or other composites,as they are consistent, always straight and deadly but for myself they just lack that little something.

Nop! Nothing shoots like wood. I too have nothing against other arrow materials, but nothing feels or sounds or smells like wood. I just can't get used to anything else. Wood is good! That wood once lived, so it just may have soul, if only residual, soul none the less!

My longbows only use wood, slowly switching my recurves also.....

All wood arrows here. They just seem to go with my longbows. Shooting aluminum or carbon out of them would be like flinging a spinnerbait with a fine bamboo flyrod.Sure it would work, but just not right for me.

bigbadjon

If you shoot a fiberglass bow you might as well shoot synthetic arrows. Personally I shoot both and enjoy all aspects of archery.

They go together for sure.  I don't care what others do but I wouldn't feel right shooting anything but woods out of my longbows.

bicster

I feel the same way about wood shafts. There is something special about them.

Sam McMichael

Yes, there seems to be something special about wood for me too. I have shot a lot of aluminum and it performs just fine on my bows, but the magic just isn't there.

Bowjunkie

I feel the same way. Nothing but wood arrows for me.

I also feel the same way about bows. I hunt only with bows of wood.

No glass, no aluminum, no carbon. No need.

I used to always say "shooting aluminum out of a longbow was like petting a dog backwards, it gets the job done but it just ain't right".

That was back when I was strictly a wood arrow guy. Now I mostly shoot and hunt with aluminum. I stump shoot with wood and really like the process of making wood arrows.

Alum and carbon are such lifeless cold arrow zombies, but they sure fly nice.

I have no plans to buy any carbon or aluminum! Not just you!

cahaba

I have some carbon and aluminum arrows but they stay in the bin. Wood seems like it has a spirit about it that's for sure. I love building them too.

I think carbon and aluminum are great-just not for me. Wood has soul; what more can I say!

Nice set Bjorn.Good luck this fall.

As far as the arrows go, I shoot wood. Cedar. I've tried others, but always come back to cedar. Best arrows I ever shot were compressed cedar that were tapered. Awesome arrows.

We have 11 archery clubs that have shoots every w/e here in the area where we live. We can choose to shoot 2 or more shoots a lot of w/e from Jan thru Sept. Plus we have the bigger camping shoots like the GLLI and Compton(not to mention an dozen more). In our quivers we carry good arrows and a junk arrow or two for shots that we know will likely result in a broken shaft. Those arrows are always...Aluminum or carbon.

We shoot wood. The spirit in a wooden shaft is part of the discipline called archery. If you shoot traditional and don't shoot wood, you are missing out on a very important part of the sport.

I shoot all 3....whatever the bow likes the best. For me, the "magic' is watching the flight of a perfect arrow.

I understand your thinking, I too feel the magic from wood arrows. There is nothing wrong with the other but for me it is wood.

I'll shoot 2016's all winter and summer long for 3D and The Muzzy Shoot... Then from August, it's woodies for me! When it comes to hunting, I think wood is best... Quiet, forgiving and most of all, romantic.
