Been reading what I can find about Dan Quillian.  What a great guy.  I was interested if anyone in the know could tell me anything about his shooting style? Actually, I'd be interested in learning anything I can about this man.  Thanks guys.

Good post Jon, Seems that Mr Quillian may be one of the unsung greats in traditional archery.
Ill be keeping an eye on this thread as I think that there is much to be learned about this great traditional personality.

I`ve never saw Mr. Dan shoot but his Son DD is a crack shot. He shoots more are less Hill style and is good at it and a critter killer. Mr. Dans archery shop in athens Ga. is the first Archery shop I ever stepped in that had trad stuff. Almost 100% trad stuff. He did believe you should shoot as much weight as you could pull pluss 10 more pounds. I had a Bamboo longhunter that shot as good as any high dollar bow I`ve owned. Wish I still had it.RC

I think I have an old vcr tape that he made regarding shooting. If you can use it, I will send it to you for a few dollars for postage. It shows him shooting and how he made his nocks.

I talked to him a couple of times on the phone and we had good conversation both times. I did buy a bow from him, but it was a little too long for me.

I remember when he used to post on the web. He was a proponent of a long draw length. Said everyone should stretch out to full potential. I had one of his  bamboo longhunters. It was 68#@28. Finally figured out it was too heavy for me.
Sold it to a good friend who had me trap it to remove some, weight since he pulled 31 inches. He is still hunting with it 15 years later.

As a dealer for Quillian bows, I had many conversations with Dan. You learn real quick he's to the point with all issues. He had a video tape out on how to shoot a bow. Not sure if it's still available. Maybe Don Stokes can come on here with added info.

Dan was at the forefront of all Bowhunting issues in Georgia and did more for bowhunting than any other person in Ga.

Great stuff guys. I'm interested in Dan because of all he did for bowhunting. I've also heard he was a hell of a shot which is why I was interested in his shooting style. But the more I have learned about him the more I am interested in him as a person as well. Thank you for any information about this man.

By the way. It is no surprise to me to hear that he was a very opinionated man. Aren't all traditional bowhunters?  Not voicing your opinion makes men seem like fence sitters. Sounds to me like this man knew just where he stood. I like that.

Hey Jon, hope all is well!  A lot of us shot up at Dan's in the early 90's. It was so easy to walk into his shop, grab some or any gear, fire away at the bales. Dan would always mosey over and start up a conversation or blunt critique of your shooting. He produced his video when he was past his prime, into his 70's and fighting diabetes but his knowledge of shooting was concrete.  He didnt practice "pick a spot" and "pray" style rather he aimed his arrow. He was a big advocate of the deep hook grip, solid anchor and ROCK solid bow arm. He shot a lot of weight because simply he Could  :)

He was a freak of nature in strenght. He loved big Snuffers and wood arrows. It was a sight to watch Dan string a 100lb longbow in the shop. He would stick the tip behind one heel and crank over his opposite shoulder. This process sometimes started at one end of the shop and finished on the other.!!!

I didnt know Dan in his prime shooting days but i saw some pictures of field archery medals of him in his shop so i know he was a contender.

Myself like others could go on and about Dan but i will give you greatest shooting advice i ever got. And Dan gave it to me.

"if your arrow is not pointing to the bullseye, it will not hit it"......

Doesnt matter if you gap, instintive, or what ever vodoo you shoot....bow arm has got line up that arrow......i personally do not trust my instinct so look down my arrow to check alignment.

I won the 93' Howard Hill World Recurve 6 months after that advice.. i should have given Dan the trophy

he is missed
Aim down your arrow because thats where it's going.
