well the weather has cooled down some today, seemed like a good afternoon to hit the woods and maybe get a shot or two at some squirrels.

As I rounded a bend in the woods trail I heard 3 squirrels scolding about 50yrds up ahead. I knew that they weren't hollering at me, so I stopped for a bit just to listen and see what might be going on. About thirty seconds later this very large winged creature comes gliding through the woods and lands in a branch about 20 feet from me. Would you believe it was a great horned owl? Now I've seen them in the woods before, but always when it was close to dark, either early morning or coming on to night. It was 3:30 in the afternoon ! Man talk about stealth, he came in totally silent, made no noise when he landed, sat there for only about 5 seconds, saw me and with the same incredible silence took off and flew away.

A hundred yards farther down the trail, a red fox crossed my path.

With all the hunters in the woods, the squirrels were on high alert! I did manage to get one shot, he was about 18yrds away and 17-18 ft up

"instinctive archery" is more like playing the violin. Without practice you may remember the mechanics, but you will not be a virtuoso.

Nice bow, a day in the woods and a squirrel to boot. You got it going on today Larry.

Larry, it sounds like you were in "stealth mode". Don't you just love that feeling that you're almost invisible in the woods? When you're in that mode it seems like the woods is alive with activity.

By the way, how's that quiver working for you?

2fletch, that quiver is awesome! I was never one for a bow quiver...to much added weight on the bow..changed the way they shot...I can carry three to four arrows and it's light enough that it doesn't effect the way the bow shoots, plus the snakeskin on in matches my limbs

Squirrels will come and squirrels will go, but 20 years from now, I'll bet it's the encounter with the owl that you will remember.
I am always amazed at the silence of an owl in flight.. I don't know if any other bird is as silent..
Nice shot too.
