For you guys that have had success trad gear elk hunting could you please share your Bow/poundage/arrow type/broadhead and total arrow weight?  I have switched to carbon arrows for an upcoming elk trip and would very much like to hear what weight arrows and bow # performed for you guys......just want to make sure my thinking is sound!  Thanks in advance for sharing....I don't want this to be a debate but just a fact finding mission.  PaLongshank

For quite a while now my set up has been the same.  PSE 300's 350 up front 30" long 648 grs.  This shoots out of all my hunting weight bows.  They pull from 55#s on the low side to 64#s on the high side.  It shoots thru everything elk, pigs, deer.

Took a bull in 2010 with a 48#@28 BW PSA III (I draw 27")... Trad Only 400 with brass insert and weighted with weed whacker string. 125 grain Magnus Stinger. Total arrow weight was 630 grains.

Shot was ~23 yards... recovery in 100 yards. Arrow totally encased in bull (quartering in behind right shoulder ((ricochet or movement at impact??)) with BH just under hide on left ham. Penetrated one lung, liver, upper paunch and femoral artery.

With that said... I recommend as heavy a bow as you can shoot ACCURATELY, razor sharp BHs and choosing your shot carefully.

Good luck!

I will be interested in the responses...have the same question. I am going to run with just short of 50 lbs. and with a  195 grain Simmons tree shark or stos coming in at that weight. Looking at 525 grain total.

Took a bull in 2007 with a 54lb at 26" R/D longbow with a total arrow weight of 600 grains.  Broadhead was a 2 blade Magnus.   Shot quartering away at 23 yards and sunk to the fletching, hitting the opposite shoulder.   This year I have switched to a Dryad ACS CG ILF set up at 51 lbs at 26"(same speed as the 54 lb R/D) and have a Carbon Express 150 with  100 grain brass insert, a 175 grain grizzly single bevel for a total of 600 grains.

PALongShank I live about an hour from you and get through Warfordsburg on occasion.
