This year I'm trying the Woodsman heads and have done a pretty decent job of getting them sharp with a new 12" bastard mill file.On several threads I've seen guys talk about using a 14" file and I'm convinced they'd make the sharpening job easier as they would be wider than the 12" file.  My only problem is finding a 14" file.  I've checked hardware stores, specialty tool stores, etc., but I can't find them.  Where do you guys buy your 14" files?  Thanks for any insight.

BOFF

I actually use a 16" Nicholson. Got it at my hardware store. The part number is 08925. Yeah, big, and can't carry it with you in the woods, but I leave it in the truck. I'm sure it could be ordered on line. If you can't find one, I'll get you one and mail it to you. You pay actual cost and shipping. I'm sure you can find one cheaper, as my hardware store is older and higher in prices than the "big store". Kinda pricey, at 24.45, but, what kind of price do you put on sharp heads. Here's one link I found. Make sure you get a  mill  file for a fininshed edge. A flat file takes off too much. The part number I gave you is for a 16" mill file. Anyway, good luck.

Thanks, Boff, for the link and the offer.  Looks like they also have a 14"er on that site.  I'll order one from the site.  BTW, I really miss the hunting in Alabama.  I'm originally from the Gadsden area, but left a long time ago.  Thanks again.  Thanks to you also, NoCams.  Our Lowes did not carry them.

another idea is to use sand paper on glass, going down in grits to 1000 or 1500

Use the file to get the edge, start at 100 or 150, and work your way finer...I bet you'll get one wicked edge with it.

BOFF

Lowes will probably order you one, and it may be cheaper from them. Just an idea.

got mine off-line.. I'll look for the site again
