Thinking about going with a trocar-tip Muzzy 3-blade with my reflex/deflex longbow of 45# for whitetail hunting this year.

Anybody have any success or failure experiences with similar setups?

What weight arrow were you using?

Thanks for sharing!

I used Muzzy Trocar tips with a ton of success when I hunter with a compound bow. Due to the speed difference in trad gear, I wouldn't recommend it. Cut on impact style of broadheads, honed to a very sharp edge will completely out perform the Muzzy broadheads with trad gear.

I hunt with bows ranging from #45 & #49 @ 28. In the past, I've used G5's with success, though I've only killed one nice buck and a turkey since going trad. There are a lot of much more experienced trad hunters here than me.

My arrows are 2016 & 2018 Easton Legacy arrows. My 2018 have 100 grain brass inserts, standard inserts for the 2016. Bheads for the 2016's are 125 grain. Bheads for the 2018's are 150-175 grains.

I am by no means an expert, but this is what has worked for me.

Have you tried to shoot them? I tried for kicks when I made the switch and had some cork screw flight. Had good success with them and wheels though...

They will work fine. I've shot three blade muzzys through quite a few critters.

They were designed for trad bows, by a trad hunter from what I understand. (John Musshachia, Sr.?)

As mentioned above, I've also had success out of a wheel bow.

I've shot them out of my trad bows as well, but never at an animal. I think they'd work great on a deer.

X2 TxAg a fellow tradgang member actually told me the same and recommended them. The guy that started muzzy was a trad shooter and designed the for that purpose. I shoot 44 lbs and am trying to decide between muzzys and magnus stinger 4 blades. They make good blood trails!

Haven't shot muzzy, I would look at a cut on contact head, woodsman worked real well for me with a 47 lb bow. Good luck with whatever you use.

I used to shoot the 4 blade magnus stingers because i was shooting a 43-45# longbow and needed a 125 gr head.  Worked like a champ and left great blood. I bet the muzzy would perform well also.

If you are going to use them you need to sharpen that tro car tip on a stone. Once that tip is honed sharp they will work fine. I myself prefer to use the Muzzy Phantom.

I second the muzzy phantom. Great four blade. Great blood trails. Great penetration!
Now then, get your weapons, your quiver and your bow and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me.- Genesis 27:3

ha ha they are a cut on contact head, they where designed by a trad bowhunter for trad bowhunting,,,, the alternative to chisel point heads..   you can actually sharpen the trocar tip too which I personally did to pop hair..  45# bow will be fine All day long with muzzys.

Muzzy Phantoms are COC, but not the trocar tip.  Nothing but COC for me!

The sharpened Trocar tip is a cut on contact design.  And it works very well.

Easy to sharpen them on a flat DMT.

They will work fine, I know a bunch of guys that have shot right thru deer with 45# and a Muzzy head. The 3 blade gave those guys great blood trails and a short recovery!

The ad states Muzzy was founded in 1984.  I am fairly certain the very first design was a trocar front, either a three or four blade configuration.  By then compounds were the rage, so whether they were "designed" for trad or not might be up to debate.

Not saying whether they are good or bad (my bud loved them) since I didn't use them.  He got great blood trails using them.

If I recall correctly, prior to the Muzzy came the Wasp, Satellite and Savora heads.  These were all replaceable blade, pre-sharpened blade heads.  The object was to provide a sharp head for those that were not good at (or just didn't want to)sharpening their broadheads.  None of these started with trocar style tips.  They worked OK.

Over time and use, all of these improved.

Forty five pounds is not a great deal of bow, although it can and should handle deer just fine.

probably will be fine.

..but..
Unless you already have them and just don't want to spend more $$$..which is VERY understandable.
..why not go with something with a true coc head that you'll have NO doubt with?

Yes, I know muzzy has made many variations of a trocar tip, but I believe the OP was referring to the brand new heads called "Trocar".
I think they will work just fine. For me, I prefer a true COC.

Killed a bunch of deer with a 3 blade 125, a 450 grain arrow, and a compound that only shot 210. Should be fine with a trad bow and a heavy arrow.
