bonjour
i'm jean-vincent
just starting bow hunting , i need a bit of help choosing my arrows
I've got a ragim brown bear 45# , my draw length 28.5/29" , my shooting range will be around 15/20 meter max  , games i will be hunting : chevreuil (kind od roe derr around 60#) , small , medium sanglier( wild boar ), cerf (deer) a bit big for my bow .
in france it's believed that under 55# you can not go for "big game" but as i see , with a good set up a lot of you manage it pretty well .
thanks for your help .

Welcome to TradGang, Jean-Vincent!  You should be able to hunt game at those distances with your bow, particularly since you will be pulling slightly more than 45# at your draw length. Just be careful to learn where you need to place your arrows to get good kill shots.  I would imagine you might also be able to hunt rabbits in France, which the French have quite tasty ways of preparing?

Right now, I'm in Granada Spain for a few weeks, which is why I'm up at the same time you are, I guess.  As I do everywhere I go, I try to find out what interest there might be in traditional archery here, but so far I haven't been able to discover any.

When a post is answered, it becomes the first post at the top.  As other posts are answered, it begins to move down the line, until you receive another answer, then your post moves to the top again.

If I were choosing arrows for your bow, I would choose either 1916 aluminum arrows, or 35-55 carbon arrows, cut to 29.5", with 125 grain tips.  I don't know if you have the same sizes in Europe or not.

A sharp, two blade broadhead will maximize penetration for you.  Here in PA we hunt whitetail deer that run around 50-60 kilos.  Many are harvested each year with 45# bows.  I just bought a recurve in 47# and am likely to shoot three blade broadhead.  I plan on shooting an aluminum arrow and keeping distances under 20 yards/meters.
I toured France several years ago and often wondered about hunting in those steep mountains.
Bonne chance.

The chevreuil seems to be close to our whitetail deer while the cerf elaphe looks like  cousin of our elk.

Welcome!  I used .500 spine ICS bowhunters out of a 45# bear recurve with 200 gr tips, 30.5 " total length, 535 gr. total arrow weight. I had very good penetration on the turkey I took with that set up.

I look forward to reading about your adventures.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I had the pleasure of going to Paris a few months ago. Pretty sure I couldn't hunt there!       now I regret not learning my French properly back in school!
