Hi

Me and my wife are visiting New York this autumn so I would like to hear if any of you know about any must see places or shops for a traditional bowhunter?
We will be staying on Manhattan and I know we are going to the Museum of Natural History but perhaps you know about some really cool outdoor or hunting shops or other museums I should pay a visit?
Anything related to the outdoors, hunting, history about the west and so on would be interesting.

Take the ride north into the Adirondacks.Manhattan is not known for its hunting.  

Welcome and have a great time in the City...NYC is loaded(100's of them) with Museum's,and should keep you busy. Make sure you have a bowl of NY Red(ask anyone to point you in the right dirrection for the best in the nabe) and seek out the " Naked Cowboy "( he is funny as chit). If your young and want some late night "fun" see if "Max" is still open. Have a super time.

Go north to the Catskills and Adirondacks.Theyre worth the trip.Theres some excellent museums in the Adirondacks as well The Blue Mt lake museum as wel as a new wildlife heritage museum that I cant remember the name of.Stay in Lake Placid and you might not want to go back home.Enjoy your stay.

Too bad you're on the other side of the state, the Niagra Falls is another must see. But if you can make it to Placid as others have mentioned, it would be worth the ride.

Another good place to visit which would be fairly close is Bar Harbor Maine.

The coolest thing we did on our winter stop in New York was the boat cruise around Manhattan Island and out past Ellis Island.

Make sure your shots are up to date.  New York ain't the cleanest place I have ever been...

If you like high end shotguns, stop in at the Holland and Holland and Beretta shops.  Can't remember the street addresses, but they're in Manhattan.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Since we only have 5 days I think we are going to spend all of our time in New York City. But I will remember the tips about the Catskills and Adirondacks for another time.

Make sure you visit Little Italy for some of the best Italian food in the world. Don't forget to order some canolis too....

The museums are fantastic, see whats going on at Radio City Music Hall. They may have some great live shows there. Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, all neat places.

No Trad Shops in Manhattan . If your here after Thanksgiving a stroll down 5TH ave is a sight to see with all the X-MAS decorations Rockefeller center with the skating rink and X-MAS tree is nice.Little Italy is still good although it's down to around 4 blocks,China Towns getting bigger though.If your down that way stop by to see where The Twin Towers once stood.The Berreta store is on Madison Ave .Holland and Holland Is on the same Street? Broadway, Times Square, all good. Museum Of Natural History is a couple of days in itself. My Buds uncle used to be Head Taxidermist there. Alot of stuffed animals there for sure.Circle Line for the boat ride around Manhattan you'll see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You could spend at least two weeks NY and still have alot to see.

Ya can go into the Catskills to Gilboa and Mine Kiln Falls, great little museum and tour of a hydro-power plant. It is part of the NYC water system. It is only about 2.5 hours or so from the city. Shawn

A trip to the Museum of Natural History in Albany is not a long drive AT ALL from the city, and can keep an outdoorsman spellbound indefinitely. It's always a good idea to bring along someone with less interest in those things than yours so that they can keep an eye on the time and get you out before the place closes.

...and then, it's just a very short drive up I-87 to Glens Falls, Lake George, etc. in the eastern Adirondacks. hehe!

 Do check out the Museum of Natural History, they have a whole section on the early native americans and artifacts.
Don't play any "street games"    
You might want to stop in for a cold one after the show, try    McSorleys Ale House  NYC's oldest drinking establishment, last time I was there they only serve there own homemade beer, either dark or light, get two at a time (it's not a german mug).
There's obviously so much more to do and see. Have fun

I love the outdoors and solitude but there is just something about being in a city with about 8 million other people that energizes me.  NYC is one of the coolest places I have ever been.  You HAVE to do the museums; as many as possible.  Soak it in.  5 days is a good timeframe.  After a week there, I was wishing I would have scheduled some country time  

One thing to see for sure is the sign that says "Thanks for visiting NEW YORK CITY".  

don't forget the naked cowgirl. a stroll through central park in the fall is always nice. for food, TAO is excellent and the original "John's Pizza" is hard to beat.  

make sure you get to ground zero. it's a very moving experience.

make sure you have plenty of money, NYC ain't cheap.

No trad shops really anywhere in the five boros of NYC There are a few archery ranges, but nothing taditional.
Do the museums especially the museum of natural history. The wax museums are great.  The bronx zoo is superb.
Go to top of empire state bldg and staue of liberty, St Patricks Cathedral.
Rockafeller ice rink should be open. If you can stya for Thanksgiving Day, the parade is great.
