I know we've been over this a thousand times, but trying to finalize the details of my setup for this falls elk season.  My #51@28 drawn about 28.5" is shooting perfect bullet holes in paper with a 30.25" ICS bowhunter 340 with 300 gr. Up front.  Comes out at 640gr. About 23% FOC and runs over the chrono low 150s.  Am I nuts for really wanting to run a VPA 3 blade?  I had exceptional results out of them last year, I can get them sharper then anything else I've tried, and they are hell for stout.  Am I leaving to much on the table by not shooting a two blade?

That's a great arrow setup. The VPA isn't a wide head.I would think that you would be fine with any good, rib cage hits but hopefully someone who has used them on elk will chime in.

I'd say you are good to go.

Good luck!!!

I am planning on using pretty much the same set up as you. My arrows are weighing in a 635 gr. and I will use a 53@28" Widow longbow and am taking my 51#@28" SAII along for a back up. I am more than confident in my equipment. Good luck! Mike

I use the same setup for everything up to elk. My setup is a 56" Blackwidow CHX 53@28 I draw 26.5 goldtip trad arrow 125gr Woodsman elite 100gr brass insert 28" long weighs 517gr 177 fps. Last years deer double lung complete passthru arrow on the ground 25yrd shot. Hit a branch and missed my bull elk last year so I can not say what it would do for shure but I have faith that the outcome would be dead elk down.  Widow

Those VPA's are sweet and a sharp 3 blade beats a dull 2 blade anyday. I have a bud who has shot a few moose with the VPA 3 blade 175 grainers and he shoots 51#s and an arrow that is about 9.5 gpp. he draws 28.5"s and shoots an old MA Widow!!  Shawn

Killed a cow elk with a similar setup 2 years ago...as Charlie says "hunt sharp" and you'll be fine!

There will probably be someone who tells you there isn't enough bow weight or enough arrow weight or too many broad head blades and that your setup won't work.  Be wary though, most of those posts start with "I've never hunted elk myself, but..."

I say good luck and shoot straight when the opportunity comes!  I've killed elk with much less thought going into gear selection.

I would say that says it all!!
