Ash is the toughest wood shaft you'll find, but it does need more straightening than something like cedar or douglas fir.

How well do they stay straight, and how heavy are they for spine?

I second Bill at Allegheny Mountain Arrow Woods. I've gotten ash shafts from him for years and he's always sent me a quality product.

I go between 5 and 10 pounds up in spine due to their heavy weight. Ash can be a bit of a pain to straighten at first but mine tend to stay that way once I get them there.

RAU

Alegheny mt arrow woods for sure. Never weighed my finished arrows but they are HEAVY. I straighten mine by repeatedly rolling briefly on the top of my wood stove straigten and repeat till done

Bjorn

Get the best you can find-there are no bargains when it comes to ash. If you buy the best from a reputable source they should be straight and stay that way too. At least that has been my experience. Ted at Raptor has some great ash.

Remember Silent Pond???

BUCK-EYE

jim is twig arrows in ohio? didnt no if they had ash. i forgot about raptor i will call him tomorrow thanks!

JAG

Still have some Silent Pond shafts.  Mr. Carleson, of Madbury Arrows, once told me they were "...tougher than the hinges of hell..."  I always enjoyed talkingwith him, when I ordered shafts from him.

Ted didn't have ash listed on his site when I ordered some shafts from him last week.  Atleast if I'm remembering right.

I've heard if you scortch the shaft with heat like a torch once it is straight it will stay that way....any truth to this?

I'd love to shoot ash but worry about straigtening arrows all the time...

Ted Fry

Nope , sorry , no longer available at Raptor.
Not enough demand and most dont like the difficulty to straighten.
They are tough but take a little work to get them there and keep them there.
Bill at Allegheny  is the man there .
Yes I do remember Silent Pond , good shafts and Mike is a good guy, sells what he makes now for marshmallow sticks for campgrounds on the East coast.
No matching and no FET.

heydeerman

Don't believe Twig carries ash. He does have some heavy ramin wood shafts tho.

Overspined

The 2 dz ash I got from AMA was suspect.  Tons of grain run out and the 11/32 were more like 23/64. I was not impressed.  I use them only for footings now.

heydeerman

I just did a google search for ash shafts and besides AMAW you have to go to Europe to get em.

Pheonixarcher

Get them while you can boy's, because I fear the ash trees are gonna go the way of the American Chestnut!

Overspined Ive ordered from Allghenny mt arrow woods atleast 10 times. The service and quality are PERFECT!  Grouped within 5 lb of spine weight and +/- 10 grains of physical weight. Did you tell them your not satisfied and give the guy a chance to make this right before you slam him publicly on a message board? If these shafts were in fact suspect I guarantee that guy would have made it right.

heydeerman

Ash...the wood of king's I have heard said. Excellent firewood. The best tree to put a climber in. The perfect bark for bite and usually pretty straight. Great arrow wood. Ash borers suck.
