Can anyone gibe any advice on a good area to bowhunt elk in CO and what week in Sept would be best in your opinion?

Not looking for your secret spot just general areas.

Thanks Brett

The Colorado DOW (dept of wildlife) publishes a lot of information about elk hunting.  Herd sizes, success rates, harvest numbers, maps of each GMU (game management unit), etc.  Best if you take a look at that information.  Some units are OTC and some are draw.  Generally - look at any mountainous areas and you will have elk.

I killed a bull in 14 in 2011. I am going to hunt unit 15 this year . I'm hunting this year with a new group if guys.  Both r over the counter areas. The last week in sept is usually muzzleloader season you want to go the week before. That's when the bulls are bugling.

As far as when to go....I've been going to Colorado for the last 12 years with the exception of the couple years I've drawn Arizona and Idaho last year. I always hunt the last week of bow season.  There is a week between the end of muzzleloader season and the end of bow season and that's my favorite time.

For location...I'd follow Pete's advice above.

A good ploce to start would be the DOW's hunting atlas  http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu/huntingatlas/
You can use the elk population overlays along with the unit ovelays to find areas where you can hunt and should find elk. I find the summer concentration overlay the most useful. If you decide to hunt in the southwest part of the state PM me and I can give you some more specific info. As far as which weekto go, all are good but in my experience the last two weeks are best for calling in elk but if you know where they are the first week can be good as the elk are easy to pattern before they go into the rut.
