If I end up hunting with a recurve this coming fall, I will be going back to Zwickeys or Snuffers on woods.  Why take a chance when you have a very well proven product.  
However, for the business end of an aluminum I really like the VPA line.  He makes some beastly heavy weight heads.

If so and you're pulling an average wt bow...
I'd say stick with the woodsman..nothing wrong with them.

The Ashby stuff is very interesting.
But where his studies really come in to play is BIG animals. True, his findings hold true for smaller game as well, but we start talking about how for the head is sticking in the ground after going thru the critter...lol

You say you have a budget...so do yourself a favor...don't sweat the broadhead too much. The woodsman is a good head. Save your fun money for something else...

Second the Eclipse. I use them for hunting marmots in rimrock. Bang them in the rocks and only need a little file work to fix. Shoot them out of a 64 lb Schafer

The heads I like happen to be the old Grizzly 190 grain El Grande (they are now a diffrent name that I can't remember) that are pre sharpened by KME. When done KME gets the weight down to 175 grains.

Since you read the Ashby reports he speaks about these very heads being in his opinion the best broadhead for hunting.

Nothing a Woodsman can't handle.  Get them sharp and chisel the point.

My vote goes for Zwickeys, Magnus classics, STOS, or Eclipse. They all have a triple layer tip making it incredibly hard to bend or break the tip off on bone impacts. However I have to agree with Charlie, just stick with the woodsman for now I have shot around 12 deer with a bow and a small hog and never once has a 3 blade penetrated any less than a two blade would have even on bone hits.

VPA all the way

I'm shooting Woodsmans now but have killed a lot of hogs with Magnus 2 blades with and without bleeders.Magnus are easy to get razor sharp and fly great.
Just ordered some VPA heads. Can't wait to try 'em out on the hogs.

Bottom line , all the broadheads mentioned and more will do the trick if you have the correct arrow and you can hit what you are shooting at .
Best broadhead is sharp and well placed, play around with a few , find the one you like and feel confident with it.
