Was doing some spring cleaning yesterday and found a tan 85% wool Fred bear looking hat. I tried it on and it fit. Was wondering how I can break the tan up on it. I thought of leather dye. Has anyone ever dyed stripes or anything on a hat before?

I dyed a faded wool camo hat once, then used magic marker to recreate shades or blotches on it.

Got caught in a horrific thunder storm rain during a spring gobbler excursion. The dye and or marker stained my face and what I took in around the mouth made me sick.  Now I only wear a quality wool hat if they are calling for rain!

I don't think the permanent marker dye will come out with rain water, but do you really want to do that to a nice hat. The tan deer don't use dyes on their coats.

try some walnut hulls soaked in water, it works great for faded camo.

I dyed a face mask with some of the Just For Men beard stuff. Worked really well and was permanent.

Here's one I camoed by dabbing some black face paint on. It happened somewhat by accident, as I got some black face paint on my fingers and then on to my hat as I was adjusting it. I decided that rather than having a dirty looking hat, I might as well add some more and have a camo looking hat. Anyway, it seems to have worked!
