I was browsing the internat the other day and I came across "horsebows" I really admire the look and style of these and id like to maybe ask for 1 for christmas. The only thing I was wondering though is if you can get them with a small shelf to put say a plunger arrows rest or something on so you can shoot vanes. Also can you shoot them with your fingers and not those thumb ring things? Thanks

The only horsebows I've seen with rests are the ones made by Lukas Novotny of Saluki Bows.

A true "horsebow" is built to be shot with the ring.

But some builders do outfit them with an arrowshelf so they can be shot "with fingers" and the arrow on the wrong side of the bow.

Elk Ridge Archery has a modified horsebow of sorts.  It has regular recurve-type tips, a small shelf, and can be shot with fingers.  The price is reasonable too.

I shoot my Korean bow with a split finger style and added a leather piece on the left side of handle for an arrow rest.Tried to shoot it with a plastic thumb ring but mine was uncomfortable for me.The horn ring that I shot when I was in Korea was more comfortable for me but I still prefer a split finger style.

yup, use a thumb ring. a new totally cool way of shooting! you pull your hand back with your follow through.

I've seen then with the option of an antler/bone shelf.  Keep in mind, a ring shooter actually shoots off the opposite side....  Bows I have looked into have the option of putting a "shelf" on both sides for a nominal ($5) fee if I remember.  There is a little explanation available at Seven Meadows (Hungarian goods site).

If you are going to buy one of these things why not go all the way and shoot it the way it's suppose to be shot. No shelf and with a thumbring. Otherwise, just buy a regular recurve. I recommend a Spitfire Horsebow. Grozers are ok. Stay away from the Seven Meadows bows.

I once owned a petite little carbon limbed(Birch bark covered) Korean bow. I shot it split finger and never had an issue.

If the outside had been covered with something tougher than the Birch bark, chances are I'd still have the bow as it was one of the sweetest bows I ever owned and it was easy to shoot and shoot well.

It handled a wide variety of arrow spine weights but absolutely loved bamboo shafts.(nature's carbon)

Saluki bows are tops in my book.

I don't think that Elk Ridge offers the KHB anymore. I have one, 56" and made of red cedar, and my husband has two that are shorter than mine. They have shelves and a simple wrapped grip.

i have a KHB its about 47-48" and #50 and it is a cool bow to shoot and it does not have a shelf so you just shoot off the hand it shoots a wide range of spined arrows but realy loves river cane arrows.
