I just thought I'd say "hi" and introduce myself.  I just got my registration approved and am looking forward to participating on the forum.  My name is Brandon and I currently live in Wisconsin.  I'm a longtime compound bowhunter (~15years), but my New Years Resolution is to learn to shoot longbows and recurves.  I made the mistake a lot of guys make (I think) when they want to get into trad gear: "I can shoot an 80lb compound, so I can handle and need a 50# longbow."  Big mistake...

That Bear Montana 50# longbow I got from my wife as a christmas gift almost 10 years ago is still too much bow for me!  I'm shopping now for something lighter weight to practice and learn on. I have my eye on a 25 or 30# Samick Sage, or (if I can swing the $) a Hoyt Excel with ~30lb limbs.  I'm looking forward to hearing and reading opinions and advice from those with more experience. Thanks!

Welcome aboard!

You're doing exactly what you need to do.  I was stubborn when I started.  Mine was 45# and I should have started at 40# or even 35#.

Perfection of form yields many fruits to the traditional archer.

Never question a man's choice in bows or the quality of an animal he kills.  He is the only one who has to be satisfied with either of those choices.

Welcome here! You're on the right track with checking the ego at the door...you'll be better of in the end! I started with a #55 recurve when I was 14 years old back in the 80's and developed target panic real bad. Wish I had the knowledge you do now at your finger tips. Keep us updated....Ryan

The nice part about the Samick Sage is that it is relatively cheap and you buy new limbs for it as you start to feel comfortable with the weight vs. buying a brand new bow.

Hope you enjoy trad, Schafer

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

Welcome.  There was a nice old 35# Wing target recurve on the classifieds a bit ago, don't know if it is still available.  There are several Wisconsinites here on the board.  It is always good to hook up in person with some trad shooters and get some feedback.  Of ocurse it can't hurt to watch them shoot before you act on any advice   :biglaugh:  .  Honestly this is a great place with an incrdible number of truely knowledgeble people who want to help.  I have never been given bad advice here.

Don't give up on that Bear Montana. It's a great bow, and a great hunting weight. 50# really isn't all that much for average healthy male to work up to. Research some archery-specific excersizes, shoot a lot, and you'll be amazed how fast the strength increases. My 15 year old son is 5'4" 130lbs. soaking wet. He has been shooting since he was 8 and shoots all the time. He can easily draw and shoot 55-60# at his 26" draw length.
We are all here because we are not all there.
