X3 on the merino from Minus33.  I have a couple wool neck gaiters and the Minus33 is the one I wear most often. Warm lightweight and doesn't itch, won't break the bank either.

Russ, you gotta still have one of the wool scarfs the USMC issued us way back then. A little sewing and you turn that into a couple of neck gators.

I bought a 100% wool sweater at Goodwill for $5

I cut the sleeves off to make a vest. Then figured heck...and i sowed them together creating a circle....best neck protection I have.....and all by accident.

Got a warm vest out of it, too  :)

Well, my wife got a couple gaiters made and then a friend stopped over and took em away for "field testing".
I am hoping to have another made up today so I can get some pics taken to show you all.
It is turning out very nice, I am happy with this first version.
Sorry for the delay,

I just talked to the boss and she is on it.

I do something similar to TxAg. I go to the thrift store and buy Merino wool sweaters for any where from $2 to $5. Some are in pretty good shape and I just wear them. The ones with holes in them I take to my moms. She cuts the bottom part where the elastic waist band is and sews them into neck gaiters with the elastic waist band part for your neck. I have a whole bunch of them and they work great. The sleavs also makegreat knit caps if they are bigger. You can wear Merino wool next to you skin and it is very comfortable.

Just buy a wool scarf, and you can wrap it adjust it or tuck it in your shirt.
Works great.

I have a couple of the wool scarves and use them all the time, but I'm tired of getting itchy and having to fool with the ends...

thanks all for the info.
