I have been sealing my arrows with polyurethane, and so far have only make basic functional arrows. I would like to dress them up with a crown dip. What type of paint is compatible with the poly? Does it have to be thinned? And if so with what? Thanks for any help. Jonathan

I have used acrylic house paint and craft paint for crown dips over poly. I thinned it with a little warm water. I have also used spray paint for crowns by masking it off and spraying the crown. These held up as well as store bought arrows I have used.

I havr used rustoleum spray paint on them and used gasket laquor fro 3 rivers works good for me. I also use testors modle paint and spray paint with true oil no problems so far

how about info on a crown dip for aluminums?

I used Bohning, and spray paint on AL shafts for years.

I always use krylon spray paint for capping over poly, and then I spray a coat of gloss on the whole arrow after its all dried.

I'm old fashioned...always used Bohning Products and still do. Had good luck with their Vinyl paints all these years.

Bohning will certainly give you the most professsional results and dips look better than sprays.

By the by Bohning is not compatible with poly so if you want to use hardware store components just use a paint that is the same base as your poly.

I have had good luck with plain old Krylon Acrylic Enamel from Wally World for $7 a quart I think ? I thin the snot out of it with water and use a homemade 2" PVC dip tube about 12" long. I thin it so it runs off the shaft like water and dip two coats for full coverage. I tape off a 10" crown with blue painters tape and dip the first coat about 1/8" shy of the tape, then next coat dip right too the tape so I do not get a big, "step" where the paint has built up. I also start my crest work right there too so I cover the transition from crown to stain on the front of the shaft.

I crest with acrylic water based testors from Hobby Lobby and dip 3 top coats with Dalys Profin scuffing between coats with 320 grit.

Almost forgot..... if your cap is some other color besides white then make sure you still dip the first coat white. It will make your yellows, reds, and other colors "Pop" ! Makes the finish color much more brilliant.

Rust oleom rattle can paint works for me.  One tip though is to only put one coat of poly over your crown dip as poly yellows badly.  For me two dips poly then cap spray and crest then one last coat of poly.  Allow lots of time to cure after cresting so it doesn't sag.

That was why I went with Dalys.... no yellowing of the clear coat. Learned that one from snag.  

Yep have heard really good things about Daly's but not easy to find in my neck of the woods.  Probably the way to go if you can get the product.
