Tried Something New - Kayak, Bow, 'n Roll

I took all my "toys" to my stomping grounds today and had a blast with all of it; bow, musket, kayak, and assorted bushcraftavetry. After some kayak roll practice with my Greenland paddle, I decided to see if I could roll up with a paddle bow (thinking that I might be able to coast inverted into a flock of geese, and then roll up for a jump shot). A 50" bow sure doesn't give much roll lift, (about halfway between a Greenland paddle and a norsaq), but my first two tries were successful, which were caught on film. :D Bless my oldest for filming. He was freezing and just wanted to run up to Grandma's house. Haha!

Yeah, having a reliable handroll might help. I'm working on rolls with just a norsaq right now, and handrolls are more miss than hit...at least until warm weather returns and I can squeeze barefoot back into my skin-on-frame.

I thought afterwards that it might be possible to roll with an arrow on the bowstring. Hmmm. Shooting with dive mask on is no sweat. I wear a mask or at least a nose clip for roll practice, since fresh water sinus flushes are just painfull!

That's pretty wild! Do you paddle upside down or drift in to the flock, if you see a big fish while your down there do you shoot it? Lol

You would have to do something to camo-ise the bottom of the boat. I know a couple of guys that noticed a lot of ducks on a stretch of river when the local duck ponds were getting hunted hard. they made a blind for a canoe and did a lazy low in the boat drift and got there limits easily. They thought that it was so easy that they could do it with thier bows. Problem was, one of them shot a nice eight pointer in the first mile, which ended the bow hunt for ducks.

Nice roll! I have been a whitewater kayak instructor for years and have never seen anyone perform a "bow" roll.
