Do you guys wear them on the outside or under layers?   Thanks.  Bill

John Scifres

On top of everything but my outer layer.  Wear it too deep and it makes for a fun removal.

I have a hunter safety system and I wear it underneath my heavy clothes si it doesnt interfere with anything and it doesnt feel like it restricts movement etc.  Its a personal choice but that is what feels most comfortable to me.  JMI

I wear mine under my outermost layer.  Don't even know it's there.

I have a Hunter Safety system vest and I wear it under my outermost layer as well. I too can not even tell I have it on and it does not restrict anything. This is my first year wearing one and should have been wearing one years ago. The only thoughts I have had are what if I did fall and then had to figure out how to extract myself from the vest to get down. I would like to see more discussion and comments about "what to do if you do fall and the vest does it's job, then what?'

I've always worn mine on the outside.

For you that wear them under your coats etc, do you run the tether out the bottom or out by your neck?

I'd think either way could lead to some types of cinching of your coats that could really kinda "trap" you if you're hanging.

wear under any jacket I am wearing...the tether comes out at collar and does not bind or cause any problems....and is safest way as if you run it out of bottom could flip you upside down.

I put mine on at truck over my basic clothing....and layer anything else over it.

Just bought a tree spider, it is made to wear under your outermost layer. I like it, should be better than going without one.

bornagain: did you get the Speed Harness or the Micro?

I got the micro tree spider and I like it. You wear it under anything except if it has a hood. I like the fact that if you get hot you can take off you jacket with taking the harness off.

I bought the micro. Easy on, easy off. It is super small and super light. Should be easy to wear all day.

I have a harness vest and wear it as the top layer.

Fellow hunters,

As a climber for a living, I fall, alot.

Never wear your tether out the neck!
Among other possible issues, it can tear your jacket clean off your body. Dont get me started on what it can do to your neck, head, ears or mouth...

If it comes from near your waist, most it will do is pull your overlayer up to the attachment point.

I have fallen much further than any hunter, on a regular bases.
I like alot of the info in this site but honestly this is one area you dont want or need anecdotal advice...

I guess I am confused.  My tether attaches on the rear of my SOP harness at the top.  It comes out right at my neck line in the rear.  Educate me on how this is dangerous to wear a jacket over it.

My harness also is attached at the top and comes out by my neck...it is the way it is designed. I am guessing if I was to fall I would be hanging upright and I fail to see why that would be a bad thing.  I am with John, especially because every harness I have looked at, the tether is attached at the top by the neck.

I have said for years that clothing manufactures need to put a slit in your outer coat just a few inches below the neckline. That way you could run the tether through it. Then your hood would be able to be used. As it is, with a jacket with a hood, there is no way to put the hood on if the tether is running up and out through the jacket. A simple slit, sewed around the edges would work. They could also sew a small flap over the slit so it isn't even visible when you are wearing the coat without the harness. My buddies wife is getting ready to modify a few of his coats now to see how it works.

I guess I'm old school and nuts but I still use a one piece belt that came with an original summit stand. I adjust it tight so I can lean against it and shoot been doing that 20 plus years. It keeps me from falling out. That said how do you plan to get down if you fall with that harness on? I can slide buckle away and get myself out. I can't stand the thought of being stuck in the tree. I agree safest is to be attached at all times while climbing and sitting but for me it's too much trouble.

I've always worn mine on the outside as a vest. I like the way it keeps bulk down. Also, with the tether coming out from underneath my outer layer, cold wind will come right down my   collar.
