I'm a big fan of wool. I wear a base layer then my wool military pants. When the temps drop though I need another layer. Any suggestions for an affordable (inexpensive) wool layer for in between the two? Thank you all.

I would look at the Merino wool layers 3rivers sells.

No worries Don. Thanks James but I was hoping for something less expensive.

The military surplus poly pro over the merino.

I buy US made Coldpruf long underwear for adout $25 bucks that are 40% merino or military poly pro for about $5-10. Both work great as multiple layers.
This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

For just sitting in a stand, a small wool blanket or heavy wool shirt on your lap does a lot to keep you warm. You would be surprised the difference it makes.

I roll mil-surp polypro and love it.  Or in extreme cold puffy pants over.

Stumpkiller

Wool sweater.  Goodwill/Thrift Store for the best deals.

On the bottom I wear Terramar longs under heavy wool bibs.

I've picked up alot of 100% wool sweaters from the Goodwill. Can't beat the price! I don't think I've ever give over 3 or 4 bucks for anything I've bought there.

Are you just looking for a layer for your legs?
If so, like said above the military heavy poly pro over the merino does help.
Is it cold or wind blowing through thats getting to you?

magnus

Dave yeah I'm looking for leg protection. Wind is what gets me most. Winter is coming quick and be cold even when the wind doesn't blow. Lots of good ideas here. Thanks.

I broke down a couple years ago ( because I was sick of being froze ) and bought some wooltimate fleece pants with the windshear. That is some of the best money I've ever spent. Good base layer is a must, but a good outer layer that cuts the wind is a life saver!

Jason

YORNOC

Wind is tough, windshear layers work but are costly. What size outer pants do you wear? Are they big enough to fit another layer without being tight? Tight is not good. I think I have a pair of windshear fleece pant liners here that I don't wear, if they fit I'll send them to you. They are bulkier than merino long underwear, so you have to take that into consideration if they will fit under your wool.
Another option is to just put another layer or two of merino on over the first. If your military outer wool has a loose weave, the wind will still get through though.

In late season when it is in the teeens or single digits with ANY wind over 5mph we wear our Cabelas Revolution Fleece pants with Dry Plus lining which is windproof. The wind is robbing you of your lofted warm air in your wool. I think those Cabelas pants are less than $100.

Great advice and offer from Dave above as well. You can also, if cost is the largest factor, try some cheap wind breaker pants from Wally World or Dick's Sporting Goods in between your base layer and outer layer ??? Would keep the wind breaker pants quieter and concealed under you outer layer and protect the loft and warm air of your base layer. JMHO

I bought some Duofold Sportsman merino wool blend long underwear from my local Farm and Fleet. I think it's something like 70% wool. Made a huge difference! I were insulated fleece bibs and my wool longhunter shirt from Ron LaClair's shop. Having that long shirt hanging past your butt makes a huge difference.
