I'm currently shooting an old DH Hunter and I like its speed and so forth but I think I want to look into a (as the title says) decent and *cheap* longbow.

Does anyone have experience with or strong opinions about any worthy longbows in the $200(ish) range?  I'd want something in the 50-60# range and it has to be rough and tough enough to come with me through the thorny underbrush of Ohio woodlots.

Before you suggest building one, let me point out that my one woodworking experiment (a coffee table) was both hideous and wobbly.   I spotted a termite wracked dry heaves at the mere sight of that monstrosity.

Thanks in advance!

Might I suggest a used Dwyer ?  I found my favorite long bow right here on the classifieds for 250. Very nice bow.

I second the classifieds.  I picked up a decent longbow for $100.00 there.

Bear Montanas get great reviews. I would love to have one in the 65lb range but they only go to 60

I'm no expert wood worker, but my TD longbow, "El Cheapo" the longbow turned out dang good, you might think about it.

For $200 your best bet is probably to check out the classifieds.  If you have a few more dollars to spend, and want a new bow, check out either the Bear Montana or the Martin Stick.  Good luck.

Not sure where in Ohio you are but I was at the Cabela's in Wheeling, WV this week.  They had a Bear Montana that was 55# in the bargain cave.  It had a small scratch on the glass on the back and needed a new leather grip, but it was marked down to $199.  Might even be able to get it cheaper than that, not sure.

Thanks for the great responses guys.  I really appreciate it.  From what I've seen so far, I think I'll be leaning towards a used Montana or something.

p.s. Redfeathers - RH.   Thanks

If you check out the classifieds there was a used Mahaska Longbow for sale there cheap 250 or less check it out a great bow for that money for sure. I'd take a Mahaska over a Montana anyday.
