After taking the wife and kids camping this weekend, I came home and split some wood till around 2:00. After getting cleaned up, I grabbed my bow and haversack, dressed in my green pants and asbell wool and headed to the woods. I had only sat there about an hour, and decided to turn to look the other way. The wind was swirling a bit. No more than Two minutes had passed, when I heard the distinct sound of a deer approaching from behind.......

Being faily new to ground hunting, I immediately turned towrd the sound without thinking. There he stood not 20 yards away. He had keyed in on my movement, and knew something wasn't right. With the young spike at full alert, there was no way for a shot. the only thing I had going for me was the wind hitting me in the face, but the jig was up and he trotted back where he came from. Disappointed in myself, I realize the evening is still youing, so I settle in for the rest of the hunt........

The rest of the evening I struggled with getting comfortable. This was the first evening I didn't take a seat. I tried everything, and finally i settled in on a couple different methods. I enjoyed watching the squirrels and even texted a couple buddies getting the low down on there hunts. Just then, I caught movement down the hill. It was a mature doe. She was slowly feeding her way to me....

She was taking her time getting closer, and closer. The wind was blowing right to left, and it appeared I was going to get my first deer on the ground, and the first deer with a bow I made myself. My hear was beating and I was starting to get real excited........

This has the makings of a great story......!   :campfire:

Its amazing what little movement these deer can see, I have had the same expierance, wind is one of the biggest factors no doubt, especially on the ground! I have seen a smaller buck several  times already, I have learned an amazing amount of knowledge just watching him, how he reacts to sounds in woods, the wind etc,I have  drew on him several times but there is a much nicer one in my area, plus a couple nice does so its a waiting game! My neighbor and I have put up trail cams this year I can't believe deer especially bucks that we are seeing on the cams, no rut yet though!
