I had the privledge of hanging out with my grandpa as a boy watching him shoot his traditional bows he made and smelling the pipe smoke out of briar pipes that he made. He had a handful of friends hanging around shooting and smoking their pipes.
Anyone got vintage pictures of pipesmokers/shooters....the cool thing about this topic is the awesome unique man made wood projects....it always amazed me how relaxed they were shooting and later sharing the campfire....

I don't have any vintage pictures. But I'm sure I can find one of me smoking my pipe and shooting my bow. I have made a few pipes but I'm not very good at it. Yet.

No vintage pictures here but I like the occasional packed pipe.

Careful with those pipes. My brother tried to shoot his neighbors cat one day. His upper plate flew farther than the arrow, minus one of teeth. Served him right.

I don't shoot with my pipe in my mouth. For fear of that very reason.

That's why my bow is not in my hands. I would be in trouble if game actually walked in front of me. lol

FYI, that's what happens when you try to shoot neighbors cats. I have a cat here you can shoot though and you can keep your teeth.

I can't believe it, but I think October will mark two years since I lit up my Savanelli Churchwarden. Me thinks I should work on fixing that!

I quit smoking, but I still chew tobacco. My favorite thing while sitting in the mountains is my little silver flask filled with something warm of course it's usually not full when I leave   :D   But I quit that to     as far as my wife knows.....

I quit the chew, for now, and am right now puffing on my meerschaum loaded with Dunhill Morning pipe. The appropriate company when watching Sherlock Holmes. I expect my corncob will be the appropriate company while waiting for that ten pointer to show up.

What are some of the less harsh pipe tobaccos?  Every one I have tried has had a bad bite on my tongue.  I am looking for a really mild tobacco?

Interesting thread . Go to JW Boswell's site on the inernet and check out Piper's Choice, and Sweet and Mild. You will not find better.

Stringstretcher, Try some Lane limited 1Q. 1Q is a very popular blend I think you will find to be mild.

Toelke Whip- 52# @ 28 1/2"
Damon Howatt Hunter- 45# @ 28"

Quite often the bite on the tongue is caused by the sugar that is in the blend, it burns hot and is quite often responsible for dehydrating the tongue. Even high grade flavored tobacco can be like that, it may start out with lots of flaavor and seem mild, but it will eventually bite you in the tongue.  Oddly enough good old Prince Albert if not over stoked is easy on the palate.  If you don't want your tongue to light up,stay away from flavored Virginia tobacco blends. As an example, never mix Amphora with RC cola.

Hit-or-Miss

I have several old pipes that were my Gramp's. One has a bowl carved like an Indian head, he bought back in the mid 30's. I might just have to put down my Kuba Kuba cigar and get some 'bacco and try her out, in memory of Gramps!

Knawbone

I smoke a pipe all the time, should quit but its the only vice I have left. Sir Walter Raleigh always Don't smoke when I'm hunting without great precaution.
