I've hung them vertically from the back of my pack and they worked just fine.  I like this idea though.

Red Beastmaster

The pad gets hot but does not produce a liquid, just vapor. I wear mine in its' holster while still hunting. It is more or less in a verticle position and works great.

To get the full effect,and use the whole pad, I thought they should lay flat. That's what my instructions say.

You know, one more hole in the bottom and a line to the other loop and you now have one that will lie flat!  I hang mine off a belt loop with the strap that's on their cover.  It's not totally horizontal but it's not vertical either.  Works vertical or horizontal in my experience.
