Went to do some scouting this morning.  Started out tagging a few squirrels then worked my way down to the swamp.  Saw some hog sign, so i decided to walk the edge of the swamp out in hopes of jumping a hog.  As i neared the head of the lake, i heard something walking in the swamp and what sounded like limbs breaking.  Got ready for a big ole black hog to step out--but something caught my eye about 30 yds away.  It ended up being a decent sized 8 point buck violently thrashing a tree trying to get the velvet off.  It was a pretty neat sight as I have never saw a deer do this before.  It was just like on TV -- his antlers were bloody and velvet was hanging off all over the place.  Tried to get closer to video or take a pic with the phone, but he eventually saw me and returned to the depths of the thick beaver swamp.  Now I am ready to fling a arrow at something.

My buddy and I spent an afternoon at the farm where we hunt, setting stands and clearing trails.  As we drove up the lane beside a bean field we had 6 deer explode out of the beans.  I had my Brittany along to get a little exercise.  Let her out of the van and she headed into the beans and jumped a spotted fawn.  She stopped and stared at it as it ran off, looked back at me as if to ask; "What the hell was that?" "I thought we were going bird hunting"

Wish I knew how to post pics here. I got a pic of a nice 9 point that was already all shined up! He'd been out of velvet for at least a few days, maybe a week. That pic was taken 8-25-12 at 1:52am! Couldn't believe it when I saw it. Thats a solid month ahead of schedule around here.
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

As an owner of two Britts, I've seen looks like that. You have me rolling!  :)

Love it!

Still in the upper '90s here in SE Texas. Hard to think about fall when you drip with sweat just walking outside. A "cold front" is due in this weekend. Might get down to the 60's by Monday.   I know it isn't really a cold front but nice for us.

Best of luck to ya.

Fall is in the air up here in Canada. Our leaves are changing like crazy.I leave in 2 days for 2 weeks of Elk and Moose hunting in Northern Alberta ,my son says its getting frosty in the mornings and the leaves will be golden by the time we get in the bush.I'm taking my son in law and were meeting my son and his friend.were 25 miles in the bush with tents and woodburning stoves. It doesn't get any better.

I also live in southeast Texas just north/northwest of Houston, Texas.

Right now as I type this at 8:15am in the morning, it's 75 degrees outside.

This afternoon, the forecast high is 98 degrees. If we can get a decent cold front to come through in the next two weeks, then Fall shouldn't be too far away where I live.
