I need a new file for broadhead sharpening and was looking around on the internet and found several places that suggest using chalk to help prevent file pinning. Has anyone on here found that to be the case?

What brand of files do you guys prefer? I see that 3Rivers carries a "Grobet" file that they say is really good. Anyone had experience with them and if so how were they?

When broadhead sharpening (woodsman's for me) do you use a really big file and stroke the broadhead along it or use a smaller file and stroke it along the broadhead? Clear as mud? Okay how about putting it this way: Do you file the broadhead or broadhead the file?

I have mostly Nicholson files,but any good brand will do. I do chalk my files,but that's mainly for heavy use. Go to 3Rivers website and they show the way they sharpen woodsman broadheads. I think they do a little of both.

I should have been a little clearer in my original post. I am not having trouble sharpening my woodsman broadheads. I watched the videos in the "How To" forum and the ones on the 3Rivers site and got my broadheads shaving sharp. My question was more to do with what size of file to get. The one I have is old and dull and needs replacing. I have been using a short file but wondered if there were any advantages of a wider file?

I would get a wider file as it is easier to lay the broadhead down on the file and get a consistant angle than to try and take the file to the broadhead.

I've been running the grobet files and like them.  I've done both laying the head in the 12" and putting the 6" on the broadhead and both seem to be equally effective on my woodsman elites

12" Nicholson mill bastard file. Lay it down on the bench and use two hands to push broadhead down the file.

I use a small file. To be exact I use a six inch chainsaw raker file. They are inexpensive and compact and I always have one stashed in my hunting pack. I like the smooth side of the raker file for steeling the WW to a razor finish. This is the best kind of file I have found for broad heads.
