Well,I'm still up in Maine.  I Rolled in to camp about 3:00 PM Sunday.  I met quite a few Tradgangers that are here for our Squapan Mt./Black Widow Bowhunt.  Its great to put names and faces together.

Monday, after getting in some practice shots I was pretty excited to get in the woods.  Tony Bucher asked me if I minded sitting a stand that I hunted when I was there in 2010...I had no problem.

I was dropped off at 3:30 and was all settled in.  The weather was a bit warm, but my excitement over came any discomfort that I might have felt.  After several hours of watching red squerrels, I cought movement out of the corner of my eye. around 6:45 A bear came in, about 125 to 150 lbs.  I watched him as the light started to fade. He would go to the bait, then walk off several times.  It had moved the barrel so the opening would give a quartering possition to anything that would come in.

After about 30 to 40 mins, it walked off.  I had to stand to get the blood flowing back in my feet!  I look down, and out at about 5 yrds is a bear.....a big bear.....

My source in the bear camp was throwing around words like "Pope and Young" and "Boon and Crockett".

Just sayin'....   :saywhat:

Well, I cant string this out so I'll finish it up.  I Looked down, and there was a good bear at 5 yards under me.  I was standing to let the blood flow back into my feet.  I also had my lower limb resting on my toe.  I was afraid to move.  As he walked to the barrel, I could see that was was a good one.  My heart sank as he walked away from the barrel and out of sight.  about a minute later he was back at the3 barrel.  He stuffed his head in and just plopped down and started to eat.
Light was fading and he was slightly quartering away.  I was fighting myself to shoot or not to shoot.  I just burned a whole just a little forward of center, drew and released.  I heard a "THWAK" a bark and a growl.  I lost sight of the arrow, so I didn't know exactly where I had hit him.  I sat and shook for awhile. There was a slight breeze, so I wasn't sure if I heard a "death moan" or not.
I started to beat myself up, not knowing where the arrow hit.  Jean (Jon) my guied found my arrow, it was covered with good blood and all 3 feathers were shaved off. I was still beating myself up.
I got back to camp, and Tony thought best that we try to go after him since there was a call for heavey rain.  we got to the where Jean found my arrow and we found blood.  we followed the trail for about 60 yrds when we lost blood.  There were several trails that it could have gone.  Tony decided to call it til morning.
All night long I kept replaying the shot over in my head.  Each time that I did so, the worse it got.  Tony felt that the bear was dead, and that there was no doubt that we'd find him.  After a sleepless night, we got back to the last blood.  We decided to form a scirmish line.  As we were doing so, I hear "there he is!"  WOW, what a feeling of relief.  The bear was bigger that I had realized.

He weighed in at 365 lbs.  He was shot at 18 yrds with a Black Widow PCH 58" 57# @ 29".  I was shooting CE heritage shafts with 250 grn woodsmans
