Hey gang, another thread about great traditional archery books got me thinking of another type of book that I would love to find and read.

I'm looking for books on survival and woodsmanship. Books that teach a man how to build shelters, fabricate necessary tools and know things that are edible. Basically I want to learn how to survive if I where to be stranded for months with nothing more than my bow, a knife and the clothing on my back.

So does anyone know of some good books of this type???

The book that got me started in this area is Outdoor Survival Skills by Larry Dean Olsen.  It covers a lot of basic skills and will especially appeal to you if you like primitive archey and camping. One thing I really like about it is the emphasis that survival is as much a mindset as it is a specific skill set. I now have a shelf full of survival books in my book case.

Sam, could you list some of the other books you have as well? I will probly start with a more basic book like you recommended but would also like more in depth material.

"the Master Backwoodsman" by Bradford Angier

x2 on Outdoor Survival Skills and a great book for edibles is "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" by Euell Gibbons.  Another for edibles is "Nature Bound Pocket Field Guide" by Ron Dawson which shows color photos of edibles as well as poisonous plants and is small enough to carry in your pack.

One other book that I didn't mention in my earlier post..."Nature's Garden" by Samuel Thayer. It is an EXCELLENT book on wild edibles.
