Went to the Ishi  Invitational bow shoot this Sunday. While shooting the bear target across a pond one of the archers bow strings broke and his Meigs longbow went flying out of his hand.  After inspecting the bow we found that it delaminated just above the handle and we think as a result of the string breaking.

I looked at the string and saw that it broke at the top loop and the string was fraying a bit in other areas.  I looked at other strings and noticed others were dry, no wax and one other had a broken strand.

My suggestion is to take your strings off your bows and inspect them.  Toss the strings that are fraying, wax the dry ones and replace your strings once a year .

Good suggestions, thanks.

That will be tough to replace, does Tim make bows still?
I want one of his recurves but don't see them for sale very often

Tim is in his 90's and made me a bow 2 years ago. It was a longbow. Great job, however he only works 3 to 4 hours a day so If you get him to commit, it will take a while. But you wont be disappointed! Later Jacques

Dacron or fastflight strings, I always keep them lubricated with string wax.

I was just looking at mine tonight and noticed some fraying.  After reading this, tomorrow night I think I'm gonna change it.

I just ordered a new one last week.. Maybe I'll wait for it to come before I shoot again.  My string is fraying on the top loop.

I make my own strings.  I made a jig and learned from reading about it online.  I've never had one break.  I use skinny strings too a lot. It's a worthwhile thing to do on your own. I always change the stock string to my own.

I had to change one today.......can't be to careful!
