Going for Elk in New Mexico September 1.   Trying Grizzly Sticks.   Two setups for two bows:
1.  617 grain arrow flying 165 feet per second.
2.  667 grain arrow flying 150 feet per second.
Which would you choose.

The one you shoot best. Dont get all wrapped in numbers that differ so little. Get em sharp get close make the shot and tell us the story.

Best advice I have read here in a long long time.

I agree with FerretWYO. That is good advise!
I'd pick the one that shot the best & was the quietest out of my bow. I would also choose a good sharp double bladed broadhead that cuts on contact.
Good luck in Colorado.

Merely backing up everyone else on this.  Shot placement is where its at, both are plenty of bow.  I've killed elk with everything from 51# up to 75#, shooting 81# this year.  But only because I want to, not because I honestly believe that the 81# will kill em anymore dead then the other setups.  Just for fun.

But You know what?  They are all dead.  :-)

I wish that I could comfortably shoot an 80 pound bow.

I'd be going with the set up shooting 165.  For some reason that's the arrow speed my tiny brain thinks arrows should go.

Get a look at Ferret's trophy room...and do what he says  :)

The difference in FPS is minimal...both elk I killed with my longbow were from a heavy arra going real slow (under 165 I am sure) and they ended up real dead real fast  :campfire:

Either set up will work fine but personally I prefer a heavier arrow.Pick the one that you consistently shoot better. Don't forget your camera.

Where are you hunting in NM?

I have my Elk Bow setup and am shooting daily. 62" ACS 49# at 28 " I draw 29" . 30" CX 150 with 50 grain insert 150 grain 2 blade Werewolf by Eclispe. about 540 grain arrow at 180FPS. Seems to work for me. Good luck to all Elk hunters. I will be in NM unit 17 September 11-18.

Take care, Randy

Both will work. Pick the one you feel most confidence with and practice, practice.
