What Knife(s) Do You Carry Hunting?

Hey all,

After looking through a couple of catalogs and my sorry knife collection I thought I would ask and see what everyone carries with them when they head into the woods.  I may have to go and buy a decent knife so you can give recommendations too.

What knife do you use for your field dressing chores?  Do you carry a different knife on your belt or in your quiver?  I'd like to hear about what cutlery you all have afield.

Thanks for the time.

there are many knife junkies like myself that will give you a wide range of answers to this. when hunting i carry a long knife, a bowie and a skinner. many times i wear a neck knife as well. there is no doubt in my mind that you could easliy get by with one good, all around knife but why do that with so many talented knife makers out there!!!  :bigsmyl:

I only carry one knife a Buck 107 that I purchased in the early 80's.  I use it for stream fishing to deer hunting with everything in between, even completely butchered two deer with it from field dressing to preparing the meat for the freezer.

I'm with ADKmountainken - I'm a knife junkie. Here are 3 that I carry the most. The big one is a Natchez Bowie by Mike Mann (Idaho Knife Works) the medium sized knife is a Kabar that my Grandfather bought in 1924. The Trapper style folder is made by Cammilus. I have a Nessmuk style fixed blade knife enroute from Mike Mann, I plan on retiring my Grandfathers knife.

Kershaw "Scallion" AO clipped to my pocket, Helle "Veidemann" for a skinner, and a SOG "Team Leader" (new, Durotech steel) for all around camp knife. When I might be way out for a week I bring along my Becker BK9. If I could only take one with me I would go with the Team Leader.

My favorites, in no particular order: Buck 110, Helle Nying, Cold Steel Bird and Trout, Outdoor Edge Field Lite and a Roger Clark rifleman's knife (my one and only hand forged knife to date). I've got an Outdoor Edge Whitetail Skinner somewhere on the bottom of the Llano River that I really need to replace.

I've already got an order in with Santa for a Kershaw Leek.

Jim Harris

Gerber Gator JR and a Gerber Game Pro, both folders. I also have a Gerber Freeman, SV30 blade belt knife that will be seeing some use soon. All of them sharpen up nicely. The Freeman is very sharp. Jim.

well the  knives i have are a helle, a buck 103 a boker and a few hand made from my blacksmith buddy Curt lyles, I love them all but the boker is the one i carry the most ,

Killdeer

This is Everready, before and after rescaling. Everready empties them out in the field. A Buck Vanguard rides in the pack. A Spyderco Endura or Kershaw Leek is clipped to the right front pocket.

The Vanguard and a filet knife do the butchering.

Ms. Killdeer,
If you would not mind my asking, did you do the "rescaling" yourself?  It is a mighty fine looking knife with a lot of character; and no doubt a lot of history.

I have a Charles May Lil' Bladie Mae, Bob Dozier Master Skinner (on the way), Queen 2-blade hunter, and Bark River Mini Skinner.  I'll get a couple  more Bark Rivers in A2 Steel and All the others are in D2.

I haven't handled one of Robtattoo's knives, but I've seen quite a few pics and he makes some great designs and uses good steel.  I'll be contacting him pretty soon for one.  Check out his knives, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Nope, my friend Jimmy the Geek did that. He's a master machinist and a watchmaker, and had never attacked a knife project before. He undercut the bolsters and dovetailed the scales in, and pinned them to boot. The scales are lignum vitae, and I daresay that the knife, considerably heavier now, will outlast me.
