Sounds like getting really clean is better than any cover scent.  Guess its time to get a good book on whitetail deer as I was last to know about their ability to pull scents apart... this is all very helpful

storing clothes in cedar boughs sounds good... we have a lot of ponderosa pine out here with aromatic pitch and resins... I think I may use pine boughs to store my clothes for a month before the season.

Many years ago deer hunting we used skunk as cover scent. It spooked deer in the area I hunted.

I used to use James Valley Red Fox urine jell on my boots. That actually did work as a cover scent on my trail and I actually had deer follow my trail. I can't imagine why deer would find fox urine so interesting.

These days I stay clean and hunt the wind. I do not have any confidence in many scents out there, with the exception of the JV jell. But I think no scent is better than any scent.

You have to add, even if this pitch smell DOESNT work to cover you, it sure adds to the hunting experience. I love the smells of pine and cedars.

The deer smells skunk, then human. The deer says to itself, Ha, some jerk just got sprayed! This whole place is totally safe now! Then the deer will call all the other deer to the safe haven. You can pick the deer of your choice and take it. The other deer are not smart enough to realize a person is there even though they saw you shoot. You got sprayed and left. So you cant be there.
If you have several tags, you can fill them all at this point. You may have to push several deer out of the way to field dress and drag out your deer. I know this may annoy you but it is what it is.  

           

There's a saying about deer that they don't just smell a hunter walking into the woods, they smell a hunter, the bacon, eggs, coffee, and jam he had for breakfast, the gas he stepped in when he filled his truck up that morning, the spilled Slurpee he stepped in when he went in to pay for his gas, and the exhaust from the car that drove by him as he got back in his truck.

Maybe not 100% accurate, but hunting as though it were is a good idea.
