Update (Round 2) 1st attempt at frogging with a bow

Kirk (Possum head), his son in law Riley and I made our first attempt at bow hunting frogs and although we didn't get but two we had a blast. We had several shot opportunities but just couldn't get them pinned down in the deep water, chocked full of aquatic weeds. We hit more than we got but they would dive under the weeds or hop across the water.

Kirk and I may try again tomorrow night, going to try and figure out a better frog set up. I was using hammerheads and a field point with a 3/8 OD washer but it would go deep in the weeds and losing an arrow was a concern. Anybody have a better set up?

try the condor. its basically like a judo but with a bigger wingspan making them harder to loose

We did try a regular Judo but it too shot deep. After moving the weeds back and giving the arrow some time to float up most would.

Well looks like a pretty good harvest for your first time out 1 1/3 leg apeice if I did my math right, just joking bud thats got to be some great practice, two shiny eyes to concentrate on.Watch out for the chiggers.Let us know what head works best might have to give it a try, love frog legs and my flu flus may show up easier cause I'm sure I'd be looking!!!

Round {2} Kirk and I went back to the Upper Pascagoula Bone Yard lake area. We arrived at the boat ramp at 20:00 and before we even unloaded the canoe Kirk had one located and trying to shoot, but the frog jumped. We were on frogs all night just couldn't get them subdued to the arrows. My first 4-5 shots were hits, but in the floating weed beds the frogs would be push down or the big flat washers (1" OD) stopped the penetration. The idea was that the washer would help in preventing lost arrows and down time in between shots by helping to keep the arrow on the surface. It worked and didn't work when frogs were hit squarely it allowed only the field tip to penetrate and if we didn't catch them quickly they would kick under the weeds

We should of had 12 frogs in the canoe the first 12-14 shots but couldn't get it together

we did manage 7 of them and had a blast but we need a more effective system.

Has anybody used a bow fishing setup? Fish arrow and reel of some type?

if your shooting in mostly grass and soft mud something like this might work.if you have acsess to a welder you could weld some prongs to a feildpoint, just a thought. im gonna try to shoot some tonite,maybe fish too.

we found that for frogs on top a 20# kids bow and wooden arrows do a greta short range job without sinking arrows into the mud and stumps and everything else.........and they float......

I have a bow that Brought for my son when he was around 9 years old, it is a BigHorn Lil Ram 52" 30#@24". I was tempted to take it as i'm only drawing 26" or so hunched over in the canoe. I'm going to try and make me a couple of the 3 prong gig arrows like on the video that Bryant posted i'm thinking a close less than direct hit will result in more snags and the prongs will help to keep on top.
