do you guys use rest or shoot off the shelf?if you can show some pics.

ChuckC

Whisker bisquits and fall away rests are the rage now I hear.    :bigsmyl:

I shoot a longbow off the shelf.

Off the shelf for me,the closer to my hand the better,I like the feel of it.

I use fairly heavy velcro, the fabric side, not the plastic side, which I buy in about 2" width and by the foot.  I put this on all the bows I make and it takes a LONG time for it to wear out.

Check out the rest from 3 Rivers.  There are a lot of things that can be used, leather, hair on animal hide, seal skin, lots of things.  One thing to consider before buying something is this, if you will be using the bow to hunt with and it may rain...heavly, don't get something that will absorb water as it can change the shot.
Alos in the latest issue of Traditional Bowhunter, there is an article about shooting off the shelf versus a raised rest.

I guess if we run into the bear that is making these tracks, we oughta just get off the trail.......He seems to like it!

Off the self rug rest that came with the bow many shots ago.

I don't think I've owned a recurve that I've shot of the shelf in longer than I can remember. I shoot my longbows off the shelf, but when it comes to a recurve, I'll take a Flipper rest every time.

OzarkRamblr

Thick, soft velcro with a thin strip of leather at the apex of the shelf is what I use on my recurves. Like ChuckC said, it'll take some abuse before it'll wear out.

I carry a roll in my archery box too for emergencies, it takes up very little room.

I'm with Jason. The first thing I do to most of mine is stick a rest on.

BamBooBender

Kasey, what sort of recurve are you talking about? A  radiused shelf is needed to get good arrow flight from the shelf. Lots of the newer recurves are designed with a radiused shelf, but a lot of older recurves were designed to use a rest.If the shelf is wide and flat then it was probably designed to use a n elevated rest.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

its an old Bear Bearcat.

I tend to put a "pivot point" above the deepest inset of the grip on my bows with a small piece of plastic. Then I put sealskin on the shelf and sideplate both.

Slicker'n that nasty stuff on a door knob!   :bigsmyl:

I prefer shooting off of the shelf, just because I like to keep it simple.

Ditto but I only use the thinnest piece of Seal skin for the side plate.  Velcro on the shelf
