I set out in the begining of the month with a task to get my recurve longbow quiet! This was a do or die quest!  Now my kijikastik recurve was the quiestest recurve I have ever shot and still was! But after hunting with her for a couple seasons i had realized that she wasn't quiet enough!! several shots in the begining had me start to aim lower on the deer to make up for the duck and it wasn't intill then I started punching tags and filling the frezzer!! Then last year while hunting with my kijikastik longbow I had a chance at a deer and held my aim low like i would have with the curve and missed right where I was aiming, Low, but the kicker was this deer never spooked from the shot, He stood there looking the other direction and I was able to nock another arrow and put it where I should have the first time!!  I want my recurve longbow quiet!!!! so I set out trying everything in the book I could think of! For 3 weeks I messed with this bow and got her alittle quieter but not where I was happie with it! Then a couple days ago I was ready to give up on this bow and just hunt with the longbow(nothing wrong with that) I went to or how to section here at the gang and sure enough there was a how to quiet strings by Apex Predator! So I ask the little wife where can I find wool yarn around here(I don't get out much) Michals she says and she says i'm heading there today, so we jump in the jeep and do the shopping thing, and as soon as we got home I headed to the man cave, and set up a string following directions from the how to!
All I can say is holy cr@# what a difference that made! Now I have my recurve Longbow quiet and a big smile on my face!! Thanks Apex Predator  for putting that up for us!!  I now have enough wool yarn to last me a real good long time!!!   :clapper:      :clapper:      :clapper:

Yep, found that it's not difficult to make your own wool silencers, and I have found the same quieting effect you've described.

Not sure why I didn't try this years ago- I may still own my widow!!  :dunno:

It's not that hard....wool puffs and I yarn the string where it makes contact with the limb. I also use a B-50 or B-55 string......but that's just me.  maybe not as silent as a longbow ....but darn close!!
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

I think I've been way to  set in my ways to try something new! I always like and had good luck with beaver fur but ran out of my supply, I like the long fur slincers and not the balls sold by archery shops! With the color of yarn I got it looks like most of my beaver slincers(barley) And It's cheaper in the long run! Hey I wear wool while hunting, why not on my strings Too!
Oh, And I did wrap the string up near the loops also as apex did in his posting!  Huge difference all the way around! Plus no noticeable speed loss!

Good stuff Jim,

I use wool almost exclusively. I just like the he way it looks. Plus its cost effective.

Enjoy   :clapper:

If we're not supposed to eat animals ... how come they're made out of meat? ~anon

Bears can attack people- although fewer people have been killed by bears than in all WWI and WWII combined.

could you wrap the string loops even if its a endless loop string???

Wool string works great on my longbow. On my ILF recurve Im trying to figure out what to do. I use angel magesty so I dont think I cant seperate the string and add the wool in there like my other strings.   bow is a dang tack driver and by far the best shooter I have but not as quiet as my hunter bow longbow.  Ill figure it out  :)

Jim, I have also had great results with the rubber string leeches. For some reason I just dislike wrapping yarn around my string on the tips. Simply adding a set of the leeches and BAM most string noise is gone on a recurve. Great in the wet weather and they don't collect burrs and stuff and also don't slow your string as much as the yarn puffs.

I'm glad that little post helped some folks!
I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables!

Thanks Tom, I may check these out after I do some real world feild testing on the wool, tha wet weather won't be to much of an issue, I already soaked them and just a pluck of the string or two and they are good to go,same as my beaver puffs! as far as burrs, stick tights beggers lice ect.., that may pose another problem and if a issue I'll try your string leaches!  I can say its a whole another world now with this recurve now silent but deadly!!

This is why I love tradgang, Sometimes we take what we know and experiment and when that doesn't work(I waisted a whole month messing with this issue) we turn to the gang,Look it up or ask a question and bamm there's an answer! Now if I just went on here in the first place I could have had the whole month hunting something, scouting and or just shooting!! Thanks again apex!
