After reading all the suggestions I got a recurve... for FREE!   :bigsmyl:

I'm not sure how great a bow it is, but it looks like it's in great shape and I think it will be a great starter bow for me, as I try this new sport out. I was going to buy a used one to try out, but I could not pass up the opportunity at a freebie.

Please take a look at the bow in the following pictures and give me some feedback as to what you think I should do first thing? I am going to need some arrows so suggestions on kind and length would be appreciated. Also, how can I find out the draw length on this bow?

ps - give me a minute to figure out how to upload pictures on this site. Thanks - Ray

straitera

Indian has been around awhile. 60" AMO & 50#@28" most likely. Good for you! Send a pic & I'll post for you.

Very nice bow.

Looks like the brace height is a little too low.(maybe picture angle?) You can try twisting the string but I don't think that's gonna help very much. Call one of this site's sponsors and they will be glad to fix you up with a custom made string.

As far as a rest and strike plate, I would go with industrial strength Velcro(fuzzy side), available at Wal-Mart, and cut it to fit and it sticks real good. I use it exclusively on all of mine and my kids' bows.

Good luck.

Congrats on your "new" bow!

Another piece of advice would be to find another trad guy in your area who can teach you a few things. It will make the learning curve be much shorter and probably save quite a bit of frustration.

Turkulese, welcome to the club!

If you do not have experience shooting a recurve, the easiest method to determine your approximate draw length is to take a yard stick, hold it to your chest, and place your hands on either side of it palms open and fingers extended.  Reach as far forward as you can keeping the yard stick to your chest.  Search the internet for videos on how to measure your draw length for a recurve or longbow and you should find some good explanations on measuring draw lenght.  3Rivers Archery has a nice video on measuring draw length.

For a 50# (50-pound) draw weight recurve, you hac several choices in arrows.  In aluminum (Easton Leagacy) I would think a 2016 or 2018 would work, but it depends on point weight and arrow length.  For crabon arrows, a 500 will likely work pretty well, assuming a 29 to 30-inch long arrow.

I have included a link to a tuning guide to help explain how to set up your bow and select arrows.

Good luck!

Very good entry-level bow. I've had a couple of them, and used them to start new archers on. The velcro is a good choice, and I'd suggest a new B50 Dacron string. Try an 8" brace height and 2016 aluminums with 125gr. points and feather fletch. That should get you close.

Yup, new string.
I think you are going to really like this bow! That's a nice one!
Someone was very good to you.
