I am an Elevator Constructor, so I build, maintain, and repair elevators, escalators and moving walks. That is my 40 hr job, but those funds are allocated to the household needs. So for hobby money I scrap out the old equipment and do small jobs for people around town. Ill cut grass, change brakes, yard work. Just small jobs to earn some hobby money.  After the kids are older I wont need to but for now, my primary income is used for household needs.
So how do my fellow Gangers fund this neverending passion and hobby.

Just part of my budget. Archery and reading are two of my hobbies. Thankfully reading isn't expensive.

and also the title is a slight play on words with the straight talk meaning what do you do for a living. I dont know why, but I am always interested in what people do for an occupation.

And Bowwild, I am a huge reading nerd myself. I have close to 500 books in my library here at the house, plus the library is just down the street.  I read all genres of books.

I've been known to sell organs, mine and those of others. Fortunatley, my town appreciates my police work enough to pay me so I have a few dollars left after expenses. It's a good thing too, Im running out of kidneys to sell.

Fortunately, we have always had enough income that I could buy the hobby basics plus an occasional extra.  Also, my family has always preferred to give cash in lieu of gifts, so I set that aside for hobby stuff. Latly, I put the change in my pocket into a small bank each night, and when the bank is full it gets cashed in and added to my hobby fund.  Adds up fairly quickly. The secret to saving up for hobby items is to make sure you never blow your entire money stash at a single event - always keep a little bit back for next time.

Nice, yes I do the change thing also. Danny, I was with the USBP for a short while after I got out of the Air Force and that was a good gig.  Plenty to hunt in Arizona and New Mexico.  I want to make a special trip to Artesia and go after some Promghorn.

I make bear style knife and file sheaths for sale here and on the auction site. I also set up at flea markets selling items from the house that are no longer wanted also tools and such.

Sam McMichael,I do the change thing as well. Pennies in 1 bank, everything else in another. I am a auto mechanic by trade,a couple transmission re-builds or busted 4X4's on the side helps out a bunch. I just split it with Mrs. Whitaker.   :bigsmyl:

I'm a full time college student but I still live at home which saves me major costs but I still pay for my ridiculous hunting/flyfishing hobbies by roofing with my dad and tending lawns on my parents duplexes. Thankfully my dad owns the company and pays our men well so that translates into good pay for me.

I've gone full circle. Started out, as a kid, playing in the backyard. Now that I'm retired, most of my time is spent playing in the backyard. Shooting in my back yard keeps me from going any where. Since every time I go any where, it seems to cost me at least $50 before I get back home, I'm making money, hand over fist, by playing in the backyard.

I don't read near as much as I should but I just put aside a little every month like it is a monthly bill. I have not always been able to do that but my only kid is about to be making his own way as he is just about to graduate from college.

Luckily I'm a high school student so the only bills I have are the insurance bills on my old truck. I hang drywall for my uncle during the summer and all of that goes to gas and archery. Not a bad deal if you ask me.
