OK so I have some 500+ grain wood arrows, with 145gr tips, and I want to get some Carbons as well.

The carbons will be 300+ grains each.

I just want good performance out of either arrow, is this even possible without re-tuning the bow?

What weight tip should I use with the carbons?

Do I go heavier to add weight or lighter?

I shoot both out of my longbow with great arrow flight, only difference is the carbon shoot lower due to the smaller dia.

I have never tried that, but I imagine that the nock point might need to be moved down slightly for the carbons if the nock is thinner.  If so, you may be able to set up a second string for the carbons.  Again, no expert here, just thinking out loud.

I shoot both regularly out of the same longbows and other than adjusting to compensate for different in weight I see no real difference. Now that I have found the perfect woodies for my go to bow I will probably only shoot woodies.

I shoot both all the time, the point gr will change your spine on the carbons so you may have to try some different combos. I shoot 60-65 cedars, 31" long, 125gr up front or 45-60 Carbons full length with 200 gr plus the alum insert up front....both fly the same or so close I can't tell! That's out of bows that are cut to center and between 45-49#'s.I draw 29".

Good question, I love to shoot carbon in my backyard or at 3D shoots, BUT I want to shoot wood while hunting - my shots are always less than 20yds so I think I only need to practice a few weeks before season to make my adjustments.

I change strings, my carbons have a smaller serving and I use two nocks for carbons and only need one with wood, don't know why and don't care

I almost always shoot wood but recently dug out some carbons that actually quieted the bow and shot great!  500 gn. cedars with 125 gn tips, and my carbons have 225 grain tips and fly great.  The carbons do sink a little more than the cedars at longer range.

I think I'm going to try some 250gr field points and see where that gets me, they are cheap enough I can buy another size if I need to.

I shoot both and see no difference.

Thanks to Trad Gang, I found Big Jim's, and I now have a dozen Nugent Blems and 250 gr field points on the way!


I wonder if I should test out some 4 fletched arrows?

I shoot wood, aluminum and carbon off all my bows. No problems with arrow flight or the weight differences. Ash comes in around 580 gr, AD Lites 600 gr and 2117's 520/530 grain depending on what points I use.

If you could make your carbons and woodies all the same, there would be no difference.
I shooth carbon and wood.
There is always a difference in total arrow weight and FOC.

Since there are those differences, carbon and wood shooth different from my bow.
