Anybody using them on there hunts? Thinkin of bringing mine to colorado from ny long ways to travel with them .

monterey

Have heard of it but not seen it!  Be sure to check regs before bringing them in.  There are requirements for bringing horses in and may apply to goats as well.

How much can a goat carry?

I have goats that I will start packing this year. When I get them conditioned they should be able to handle 40lbs maybe less with this being their first year packing. We take them on walks behind our house on the logging land for training. They are fun to have around.

I believe there's a thread about pack goats in the archives. I've been considering it now that I've got enough time and property to work with some.

Just take care that the local critters don't eat them.

I'm currently reading a great book by Joe Hutto called "The Light in High Places". It's about his work as a scientist studying Big Horn sheep on the high peaks of the Wind River mountains in Wyoming. In the book, he talks about using pack goats to move some of his gear up into the alpine reaches of his study area.

He also recommends a book by John Mioncynski called "The Pack Goat".

BDW is right! Met a Guy coming out of a wilderness area, went in with 5 pack goats was coming out with 2. Said the last night they stayed in the tent with him.

Pretty handy you dont have to pack food or lead them if trained right. My taxidermist friend used to have them and he swore by them.
