I'm a newbie and looking to find as much knowledge as possible...not to mention a few great stories!  I see there are a lot of books out there (although there is only 1 (ONE) at my local Barnes and Nobles bookstores...one book between the two stores)...so in an effort to start in the best place and take advantage of your experience.
What are your TOP 3 books in the following areas. (or just your top 3)

rick welch shooting DVD. Best instructional shooting DVD imo. I'd go to his school in perosn if i could afford it.

Maurice Thompson: The Witchery of Archery

E. Donnal Thomas: Longbows in the Far North

The above three are all great reads.

Newbies could get a lot out of G. Fred Asbell's books on Instinctive Archery.

The Masters of the Barebow  DVD series are very educational.

Traditional Archery by Sam Fadala is a great read for the newbie. Sam also has a second edition out.

Sam covers shooting, setting up and tuning, all the different tackle, making arrows, maintenance, safety, and much more.

I'm still a novice, only shooting a few years - just got this book and find it very helpful.

Shooting the Stickbow is another good read.  I love the Masters of the Barebow for the diversity, although Welch's DVD's are great too.

Patrick, just scratch off MBB I & II, and III-if I can find it.  Pm me your addy and I'll mail em to ya for a while. Watch em a few times and send them back, because by then, I will have forgotten half of it and need to re-learn from my errant ways.     (seriously)

I'm new to Trad Archery, too and I have reread and highlighted topics in this book so often the spine is broken.

What are your TOP 3 books in the following areas. (or just your top 3)

If you can find yourself a copy of the tips Fred  Bear put out on his record with curt gowdy(?). They are in Dick Lattimers "I remember Papa Bear". Very good tips for the newbie without being overburdnened IMO.

I agree with toddster, X2 on the Lettin' Loose DVD for good entertainment. I really enjoy that DVD.  Brings it back down to the simple thrill of the hunt.

To learn from, "The Simple Art of Winning" by Rick McKinny gets great reviews from folks who have proven their shooting prowess.  Masters of the Barebow III is, I think, the best instructional video on the market.  Easy to understand, easy to follow.

Any of the Fred Bear vids are entertaining, as is "The Legendary Hunts of Ben Pearson", "Moments of Truth" with Bill Negley, and "The Lost Antlers"--all are great.

My advice is do your homework.  If you want to shoot better, get advice from proven coaches (i.e. Rick McKinney, Rod Jenkins, etc.).

WOW...thank you folks.  Great group of people here.  I will start with your suggestions and keep going. Can't wait to get deeper into it and learn more as I go along.  Although it has only been a few, everyone I've met that has been associated with traditional archery has been very helpful and giving of their time and knowledge.  We went down to the Texas State Championship last weekend and met some great people that were very kind and helpful to a complete new guy.

A few really good reads on bowhunting include:

1) Trailing a Bear by  Bob Munger (hunting partner of Fred Bear)
2) Bowhunting Alaska's Wild Rivers and A Thousand Campfires, both by the late Jay Massey
3) Longbows of the Far North, an Archer's Adventures in Alaska and Siberia, and Longbow Country, both by E. Donnall Thomas, Jr.

My favorite "how to" books/videos include:

1) Volume III of Masters of the Barebow video(the other versions are good, but Vol. III is exceptional)
2) Instinctive Archery by G. Fred Asbell
3) A Beginner's Guide to Traditional Archery by Brian Sorrells

Great videos include a four DVD set of Fred Bear's hunts and a 1926 film of Art Young's trip across Alaska.
