New to trad archery - been bow hunting for 30yrs though.

I have a 45# Bear Black Bear recurve, shoot it okay, but I don't feel like it has enough "poop" to humanely handle an elk.

Considering buying a used bow off the classifieds, just wondering what I should be looking for.

Not looking to start a fire here.. Just wanting to hear from folks that have taken elk and what their setups were, shot placement, range, etc.

The elk I have taken have been with low 50's @28 draw bows, 10 grn/lb arrows and double lung shots.  Shots have been less than 20 yds.

I probably wouldn't shoot the bow you mentioned above either, but that is my opinion.  Lots would say low 50's would not be enough, but I have seen it work just fine.  

Shoot the highest lbs you can comfortably and more importantly accurately shoot.

I would be looking for a bow not too long as elk woods can be thick, but not too short either, it needs to be as stable and accurate as possible, elk hunting as you know rarely offers a perfect level shot.

Where in Colorado are you? If your in Denver area, I'd highly suggest stopping into Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear where you can shoot a bow before you buy it. Not that you won't get a good bow from the classifiede, but  by trying it first you will know if it feels right in your hands from the grip to the shot! Thanks for the advice!  New to trad bows...  what would you recommend for a length - I think the one I have now is 60 inches?

FWIW, I've don't recall anything perfect about the shots I've taken on elk... Maybe I need to get myself a tv show?  ;-)

You wont be disappointed if you drive down here! The length and draw weight of bow you need will depend greatly on your draw length . Longer draw you have the longer bow you might want. Go see Tom and the boys and tell them you are wanting a bow and some direction . You will be happy you did!

Old goat has it right...much depends on your draw length.  60" seems to be the best of both worlds to me. I have gone shorter and longer but keep going back to 60".
