BW silencing tip

Hi gang,

Just got a BW PSA V.

In the first shots it seemed a little noisy! After applying some wool string silencers it got a lot better.

When comparing with a one-piece it sounds louder. Anyone experienced this?

Any tip to silencing it? Should I install a wool "serving" to the loop ends?

Yes, every BW I ever had was a little loud, but adding a wool wrap at the ends of the string will help.

Here's what I do, and my Widow is whisper quiet.

First, use a good quality, skinny string with padded loops. Then I use two small sets of catwhiskers placed 9 and 15" from the string ends.

A.S. makes the string you really need,your BW will change its sound and more performances too.
If you make a search this is what most Widows? owner do,myself as well!

Ditto the skinny string-- SBD makes a great one, complete with wool silencers and end wraps installed.

I had a BW SAV,I made up a 8 strand padded loop D97 for it,50#@26 bow.Put on Bow hush and 1/2 a hush puppy,I would get comments on how quiet it was.

you recommend a skinny string so you can wrap the ends with wool and secure that the string doesn't come of the groove?

I've tried 2 small wool silencers at those places but it didn't work as well as the original spiders that come with it.

With a 14 strand string is it risky to try and wrap it with wool?

How does the brace affects the noise? Higher brace = less noise?

What is the normal sweet spot on BW PSA brace? Anyone knows this?

I like a skinny 6-8 strand string as well on BW with D-10 or astroflight material.Wool puffs and a brace hieght of about 9 inches from throat of grip to the string.

I personally don't wrap my string ends with wool. I have done it in the past with standard size (14 strand) strings and had no problem with the string staying in the limb groove.

I've seen (heard) a huge difference in noise just by replacing the (factory) 14 strand non-padded loop Dynaflight '97 string with a 12 strand padded loop Dynaflight '97 or 8125. One small set of cat whiskers was all that was needed.

As with any bow, proper tuning is a must for the quietest shot. I prefer tinkering with the brace height first, to find the "sweet spot". The add silencers, and adjust them to find their sweet spot. Moving the silencers an inch or so up or down the string can make a big difference.

Proper nock fit makes a difference--very tight nocks can add noise, plus tuning problems.

Shoot at least 8 grains per lb--heavier will be quieter.

Work on your form--a sloppy release will add noise. A clean release is quieter, plus you get better performance, better arrow flight, more tuning lee-way, etc.

Well gang, let me tell you, I simply changed the O-rings and it's a complete different bow. So quiet now...

The old O-rings where completely flat, almost letting the limb to touche the riser.

Is your Black Widow new? I have a new PSA X and it is a little loud. I have been tinkering with it. I was thinking of changing the string. I just put a new B-50 string from 1st class strings on my Bob Lee and I can't believe the difference. It is dead quiet and fast.

No, it's a 2009 bow. I bought it 10 days ago.

Look at the O-rings. Mine came completely flat and the bow was loud. I bet the limb was smacking the riser although it didn't left a single scratch. Today I've changed the o-rings and, like I said, it was a different bow. No noise that bother me at all and much less vibration. The o-rings are sure there for a reason...

I also ordered some new strings, skinny with padded loops. Don't have them yet so can't tell you how well they will work but I believe they will bring the noise to virtually no noise level and get me some more fps.

My bow is 2 months old, the O- rings should be good. I have not over tightend the limb bolts. I sent a e-mail to bearbowman of 1st class strings. I will probably order a new string.
