Anybody else from MS or any other southern state noticing that the Mosquitos are really bad this year?

I have literally preached the great benefits of the Theromcell I used them and stand by them as a complete necessity in our southern woods, but I went out to the Pascagoula River WMA yesterday and they absolutely run me out of there it was so bad.

I was out for 2 hours with the Cell running continuously and it had no effect none, nada, nothing!  This is the first time this has happen, I was slowly moving along a trail and there was no wind to speak of, calm to low 1-2 mph if that.  The flying demons were like a black cloud they were so thick hundred if not a thousand completely covering my body!

Any body else seeing this and what are you doing to cope?

You may have had a bad pack of pads. I had a pack that was lighter in color than the other pads in another pack.I live along the marsh on the Jersey coast and the Therm always worked.
Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a
difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.

The winter was too mild this year and add to that the rain and damp conditions. Mosquitos are really bad this year. It is hard to sit outside and enjoy these nice evenings with out getting eaten alive. It's going to be tough during early bow deer season this year.

Well I find when moving at all it does not work.
As well as it takes a few min. when still.

This is when I was living in SC. Always had to wear something around my face. Like one of those
Camo socks things that also cover your neck. Hot but bettter than the bugs eating you alive.

During wet years I've seen them so bad in the swamps of Fl. that two Theromcells wouldn't do the trick. Had to have a head net and top to go along with them.

Worst I've ever seen was back in the 50's down in the 10,000 Islands in Fl. I remember being out fishing from the bank and right at sunset when they came out, it sounded like a squadron of airplanes off in the distance the buzz was so loud.

May Day! May Day! May Day! lol Don, that what I was saying yesterday!

I agree Rusty that it doesn't seems to work too good while walking and that would make sense since it's purpose is to surround you with a 15' x 15' blanket of protections, but yesterday even sitting still it was not cutting it.

They were so thick every time i open my mouth I ingested some.

When I go back i'm afraid i'll have to use OFF and stay downwind even more so.

There is a repellant called Natural Causes that I like. It does not contain DEET but does use Cedar oil, Citronella, and Lemongrass oil. It does have an odor, but it is not like the chemical smell of Off. When I hunt, I always use cotton gloves and a face mask that helps with mosquitoes. Mostly, I need the insect spray around the openings at my eyes and nose. Try something like this along with the Thermocell. Maybe it will help and be less alarming to game since it contains more natural scents.  Good luck!

Hey John, Skitters seem to be thicker than past years up in the MS Delta National. I dont have much luck with the thermocel when moving/stalk hunting, but works good on stand. Been using deet myself this year and just huntin the wind. Call me when you want to do that hunt. Take care, Shane

They seem about normal around here(south of Natchez near Lake Mary). If anything, they seem to be not quite as bad since we have not had rain recently.
Having done so much, with so little, for so long, I can now do anything with nothing.

They are horrible here in Louisiana! The only time I can get a thermocell to even help is when I am sitting completely still.

We'll I tried another hunt this afternoon and used a half a can of Cutters and it did help to keep them at bay but had to reapply after about an hour or so.  Didn't see any hogs except for one on the way out of the WMA.

Got a nice batch of em this year in South Ark. Worse than normal.

LA Trapper

With all the rain we have had in LA, they are intense.  Pulled in the driveway tonight ( I don't have an outdoor light, bulb is out on the pole) opened the car door to exit and six swarmed in and went to the dome light over the dash. I told my wife can you believe it, the car has barely stopped.   If the wind wasn't blowing 20+ mph tonight you couldn't walk outside.

Night Wing

Here in southeast Texas, the mosquitoes are ferocious this year due to all of the rain we've had which is a blessing considering how bad our drought was in 2011.

Have to take the good with the bad.
