I'm shooting in some pretty thick ivy next to my house and it's extremely hard to find arrows when they get buried.

Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative to the Zwickey Judo's, or maybe a DIY solution, that will keep arrows from going under the brush?

Soldier or carbons?  I use a 380 case on 100 gr glue on. Hacksaw an X on top.  They thump rabbits and do not go far in brush.
You can put a little duck training scent on the fletching and train a dog to find them.  Y lab liked it when she was younge

I have both wood (11/32") and carbons (5/16").  What size shafts do the 380 casings fit on?  I don't shoot but I think I can score some casings from a friend of mine.

Try adder small game heads by martin they install behind field points and don't cost the farm 5 bucks for 6 and stop arrows from going under grass plus add a certin shock factor to small game

A 38 casing will fit over a 11/32" wood arrow perfectly. For my carbons I epoxy a 38 casing over a 150 grain field tip to get the weight I want for my small game heads.

Look here in the archives for homemade judos. Simple & cheap to any weight you want. They work just as well too. Great heads.

I saw on fleabay a rubber blunt head with what looked like loops of weed wacker cord that formed a couple loops, looks to me like someone could make these easy and adjust the cord/loops to fit his needs

This may be a dumb question, but why are you shooting in the ivy? cant you shoot in another direction.

 If you shoot alum or carb you can get the threaded insert pieces for wood furniture. They have 4 points and they are made to be hammered into wood so you can screw a bolt into them. put a field point through the head and screw it into the arrow.

 Another cool idea is to take an old snuffer and a dremel and take the point off(where the point comes down the three blades come together at the first connection)just dremel the blades off and you have a X type head that will be devastating.

Judo alternative?....in my eyes there isn't one!

I find bunny buster heads work well.  While they don't have the wire. the concave lip tends to catch as soon as it hits and they don't bury.

Ipcjon, I have a 30-40 yard lane of ivy next to my house and it's the safest place to shoot.  No doors and all fenced in so I don't have to worry about anyone walking in on me.

Judos are nice because of the spring arms.  I've ended up with a lot of bent arrows due to using washers, or those threaded furniture wood-insert things mentioned above.

I have been using the hammer from 3rivers and have not lost one yet.  I like them better than the judos

I like these they really do a number on bunnies and are hard to loose, I think you can get something like this from 3Rivers, they call them hammers, both are sponsors

I second the Martin adders. They weigh 25 grains and go right behind a fieldpoint or blunt. Work very much like a judo.

We used to do this a lot years ago. It'll still work.

check out the   Zwickey Condor  on our website.  It's like the regular judo points but has extra long arms that do an even better job of catching brush and slowing down the arrow.

Also look a look at clarkbroadheads.com.  Jeremy has some tips that have even wider and heavier arms that would surely prevent lost arrows.

You may want to consider a little engineering control, in terms of site management.  A little Round-up can clear a lot of vegetation in a short period.

i like the judo's, but when i cant get them i use a .38 head and melt some lead into them to get them up to 125gr. mount on the arrow, then drill two cross holes and epoxy in two short pieces of hi tensile fencing wire. cost: zip- just a little time- and a few minutes on the wifes stove - i just lure her out of the house with the ol credit card trick- so i geuss the collateral cast is a little high- Oh well!!
i could do a small build along if any one wanted to see.
