On a short walk this weekend looking for antlers, I started hearing the wolves howl about 8:30 a.m. and they continued until I was out of range 9:30 +/-.  At one point I jumped a small buck without antlers, and turned to walk away from him as is my custom this time of year.  I stopped to get a good look at his head to see if he was indeed a buck, at which time a wolf howled not too far off.  After the wolf howled, the deer showed no sign of leaving so I figured I better move on not to distress him.  When I turned and started walking, he followed.  He stayed 30-50 yards behind me for a good amount of time.  I figured he  must have felt safer with me then on his own in wolf country.

Oz,
I wonder if that buck was trying to show the wolfs you were an easier meal to catch and point them to your location ?  :dunno:    :D

Tox

Deer are smart. He knows by following you he doesn't have to outrun the wolf. LOL
We use inefficient tools by choice, precisely because they are inefficient. Making them more efficient defies our original intentions.

He probably knew that if the wolves knew you were there they'd stay away. They seem to be more afraid of us than deer are at times.

With more and more wolfs showing up in Utah, may see this happen.

Your jeans were to tight, sparked a late rut in his mind...LOL

I had 2 young deer hang around not 30yrds away when I was putting up a stand, they stayed the whole time and it didnt bother them at all. And when the season started they never came back! thats my luck

difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.

I would have been an easy meal. thanks, tight jeans would have made the little bugger sick, unless he was lusting for an elephant deer.
