2012 morel hunting

First of all I want to thank the Terry and the rest of the Tradgang admin for allowing us to have a mushroom hunting thread each year. I always look foward to the pics and post!

I got this pic this morning from a buddy while I was at work.

Tommorrow I will be out with my boys looking for turkey sign and tasty morel morsels.

The way the weather has been around here I would bet most are up and gone before turkey season.

I will need a new excuse for not not bagging a bird. :D

Good point I'm also going to have to reevaluate my excuse list.Oh well tag sandwich is much better with mushrooms on it.

I guess I better take a little look around in the morning. Skillet full of fresh fried mushrooms sounds pretty darn good.

I have searched in vain in North Georgia. Do they grow here? I grew up in Michigan and I sure do miss them. I can get them at Whole Foods, but they are about $65 a pound. I wont pay that for something that was always free for the taking

Neighbor down the road found 4 last weekend, got out and checked my early spots but nothing yet. I usually find some in the yard the first time I mow each year and this year that could be next week.

Where do they like to grow? I find a few each year, but can't duplicate the areas.

I found about thirty last year growing in my girlfriends yard. Check it daily with the weather weve had here

Still way early here in N. Idaho. My yard is still under about 10" of snow...but unless things change drastically it'll be much earlier than last year. Last year I found a spot where I pulled out a 5 gallon bucket full in less than 45 minutes and left about that many there, you can bet I'll be checking on that spot this year.

There are many tree species that people key in on in different areas. Elm and poplar are my favorites. Usually find them early in hardwoods then move to poplars that are on the edge or in pines. Warm, wet soil without to much leaf cover is prime. Like anything else the perfect looking spot a lot of times doesn't have anything and the worst place imaginable produces.

I wondered if they would start popin. Its been almost 80 degrees here the last couple of days. I've never been all that successful at it, I guess its not any differnt from the rest of my hunting, but I'll always keep coming back for more. I just love getting out there.....DB

To Overspined- I was always told to tap them gently after you pick them to shake some spores loose to repoulate that spot. dont know if its true or just coincidence but some spots had them year after year not the exact spot but within a few yards.

you can put them in a mesh onion bag or something like that to help spread the spores,in stead of a plastic bag.

I've been looking for some morels for two years now and still haven't found any! I've never tasted one either so I'm itching to try them.

i went a couple days ago and all i found was a false morel( big red) as they are called around here, didnt pick it though.
they are the first ones to come up then the greys,then the whites and yellows.
