Dang bro, that stinks!!

Let the bowyer take a look, here is one I fixed!! LOL

Had a mule wreck in CO and cracked my bow down from the side plate into the handle area,I'm tryin to salvage her quickly so I can hunt with er this fall......

The crack(hilited with erasable marker)

1/8" brass rod, sanded rough and riser drilled to fit....

Smooth on applied, tape on backside so it can't run out, puddled down into the holes around the rod.....

May have caused trouble later drilling those holes in a line, surley glue and brass are as strong as wood, what do ya think?

Stay tuned......
Stay sharp, Kenny.

There is a world of difference between fixing a 45# bow and a 75# bow. You shoot pretty high poundage-dontcha' Terry? I'd say have a bowyer look at it and if possible the guy that made it.

Bud B.

Hate to hear that Terry.

That hog is on borrowed time.

Where on the riser is it? Without seeing a picture it is hard to imagine the damage, but if you can feel a bur, it sounds like something (the arrow perhaps??) hit it rather than being a pressure crack?  I had an arrow come off the string like that at release one time and hit the riser sideways.  It was essentially a dry fire.  Everything turned out ok, but that is why I will not use nocks that don't snap onto the string.

Had something like that happen on a longbow i had, tried filling in the crack with epoxy but it didn't help crack kept growing. I did contact the bowyer and with a little back and forth conversation I did get a new bow at a very discounted price. In my case the bowyer admitted a design flaw in the riser.

Terry,
I had a riser explode on me! I had been deer hunting close to home. Came home for lunch. After grabbing a bite to eat, I went out to shoot a few arrows. On the first arrow I was going to shoot, the riser of a my 3 pc, recurve exploded at full draw(I was using a bow quiver). Arrows with broadhead were cart-wheeling in all directions including hitting me.

Fortunatly I wasn't injured except for a weak knee-conditon afterwards!Not a good experience!

It's good you were not injured!

This is a scary thread, kinda deja vu thing.  I had a weird dream last night that my longbow broke in half in the throat of the grip at full draw.  Actually went downstairs to the mancave this morning and checked on it just to make sure.

Hope yours is fixable, Terry.

Swinestalker

Glad you weren't hurt and I hope you can get her fixed, Terry.
Having done so much, with so little, for so long, I can now do anything with nothing.

Send it to the bowyer he knows his bows better than any one else and let him make the call for saftys sake.

Rob DiStefano

should be checked out by the bowyer or any competent bow repair person, if possible.

for the very most part, fine line riser and limb cracks are quite repairable with quality cya.  bigger cracks respond very well to quality marine slow set epoxy, possibly with dowel or steel pins.  in all cases, the resulting fixes are typically much stronger than the rest of the wood.

i fix completely sheared off guitar headstocks on almost a weekly basis, directly epoxied back on without any pins, and strung up with well over 100# of steel string tension - the repaired areas are SO much stronger than the unaffected surrounding wood.

Ziracote and bocote, are you sure the crack was'nt there before the dry fire . Both woods like to surface check, even long after the bow has been used . If you cant feel the crack on the oposite side it maybe just that and super glue will work If not and its not by the fade out somtimes a stainless screw can be put in and the head ground off and covered and if you shoot it by me I'll stand way off to the side..Tim

Terry Green

Thanks Guys....yeah, I'm going to send it back to the bowyer like I originally stated....I do use nocks that snap on that are sanded to they are not too tight and are custom fit, ....the arrow didn't hit the riser, the crack is on the bow quiver side like originally stated.

Not going to contact the arrow manufacturer....as many arrows of theirs I've owned, I doubt it was their fault....but if it was, it was probably a fluke and the flaw was inside the shaft as I inspect them real well before I wrap and fletch them.

If the bowyer says he can fix it....it will be hunted with again....cause I believe what Rob said, a quality glue will be stronger than the wood itself....but you can bet I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks guys....I'll get it shipped off today.

Sorry to hear Terry, but as many have said I think it would be repairable... but without seeing it would be tough to say for sure.  If it is the bow I'm thinking of I sure hope it can be saved!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
