I just finished building a new archery backstop at the end of our pasture. I use treated poles and lumber, galvanized hardware, and two stall mats. There is archery activity in our yard almost every day so it will get a LOT of use. On any given week crossbows, compounds, and of course traditional bows are fired from 5 to sixty yards down range. There is room in front of this target to shoot up to 80 yards up to 180 degrees on either side of the target. The stall mats are great. They are one inch rubber with a surface kinda like synthetic turf to keep horses from slipping on them when wet. From 10 yards a arrow from a 55 LB trad bow only buries the field tip. From a 75 LB compound the tip only barely comes through. When you take the arrow out the hole seals itself right up. I was shooting 50 yard bombs at the center bag with my 40 LB Samick and a shot that missed the bag bounced off of the mat with no damage. Next we start a 7 target 3D range laid out like a mini golf course in the woods behind it. I am getting together a group of friends to form a little archery club to offset some of the cost of the 3D targets. We don't have a good 3D course here in Greensboro so I plan to build one that caters to traditional as well as compounds and crossbows.

Very nice!  Is that horse mat expensive?

I paid;

2 stall mats         $80.00
2 treated posts       30.00
2x6 10' treated       12.50
2x4  8' treated        2.50
hardware              10.00
                   --------
                  $ 135.00

It won't take many saved $10.00 arrows to pay for the entire setup.

X2 on cost of the horse mat??  Awesome set up and doesn't look real expensive.

riddleofsteel

mats were $39.95 each I bought two = $80.00

the two mats are over lapped about 3 inches in the center of the backstop.

Neat idea, and thanx for sharing, but can't imagine the use of the word xbows on a traditional bow forum especially since the "Trad Gang is not Popular Mechanics" thread...

Great looking back stop there. i think i may have to try those mats.   :thumbsup:

i think it's good to have something that will stop arrows from the more powerful high tech bows too. you'll definitely get more shooters and financial support if you include the high tech crowd.
