Can someone give me a good site to go to to picking out the right shafts..I am not sure what grain runout is and didnt know about the rift direction until I read starkmans post..For my saftey sake  :D  thank you

I think is was Vermonster that posted some real good pics of arrow grain run out a while back.  I'll see if I can find them, if not you might try a search.

i think it was gene (scattershot) thread ..i looked for them and found the thread but they were x'd out or deleted.... geno...check with scattershot he has some good pics...

I have deleted those pics from my file, but I'll see if I can get some back up for you. Basically, runout is where the grain of the shaft runs out along the side, resulting in V's when viewed from the top or bottom of the shaft, like this >>>>>>>>>>. They are considered acceptable by shaftmakers and sold as premium shafts if the runout occurs in more than 22", I believe.

The V should point toward the front of the arrow on top of the shaft when nocked.

does that mean a 6" run of  >>>>>>>> in the middle is where you would get into trouble. How about this >>>> <<<<<   It looks like all my arrows are backwards.    the more I learn the less I know...  :confused:

Not really high quality shafts if they look like that geno.

follow one of those "V" back into the shaft, you will notice that it eventually ends up on the other side of the shaft, that is called run-out, it means that the grain is not running parallel with the shaft. If it occures in less that 20 or so inches, THOSE SHAFTS ARE DANGEROUS !!!!!!!!! In the old days, 30's-60's any run-out was considered less than premimum, and run-out that occured in less than 20 or so inches NEVER reached the arrow shaft consumer.

Here are some new pics. The top arrow in both pics is an ash shaft with severe runout, the bottom shaft is a cedar with almost none. That's what you're looking for.
